Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

Forum representative of Nike employee mood overall?

The tone of the forum is very negative. I wonder if this is representative of all Nike employees, or are do the employees with negative views gravitate to forums like this? If you are honest - do you think your co-workers are as down on Nike as you are?

FWIW - I think Nike and the culture are both in a terrible place given layoffs in the face of astronomical exec comp and soaring stock price. As well as the total disorganization and wear and tear they are putting the org through with the wait, and then wait some more before we lay you off. Only Nike and its marketing team can pretend that they "had a plan ready for CDA and we are ready to execute". They are obviously making it up as they go.

As someone who has been around for a while and seen many of these layoffs, I can say that while simplification is needed, the bloat is NOT at the level where work actually gets done. The bloat is at the Sr leadership level (Sr. Dir and higher). Global Tech is filled with Sr. Directors who do not understand the technology their orgs deliver and support. They glaze over details, struggle to understand the day to say struggles that their teams face and refuse to educate themselves. This bloat needs to go.

Don’t worry. The leader of Valiant Labs will solve it.

@OP- I think they have even admitted it... ELT untouched (but of course!), they cleaned up the VP world, and then they announced - “now we will do the work and see what this all needs to look like”. They are still deep in it from what I hear.

All along JD has been talking about it not being about just cutting people, and they have no specific number in mind, but sure enough in July they already knew it would cost them $200-250m. They clearly have had a good idea for a while, even without doing the work... so they have targets they are trying to hit. With his rate of lies, lack of compassion, and general BS he’d likely get on well with the current POTUS.

Yes, the culture is pretty poor, and fading rapidly. However, I actually enjoy what I do. I appreciate the people I do it with. So I do want to stay. I would love it to be more like the old-days, culture wise, but in the end it is a job, a career, something I am proud of giving my time. Not a club, social group, or somewhere I go to hangout in my free time. I don’t live, breathe, eat Nike. Heck I shop, and wear many “competitor” brands off campus. As long as I enjoy working with the people around me, and my work is appreciated, I’m cool.

Take care

No one can speak for everyone else - impossible. What I do know is this: if we have this many people coming hear to air their frustrations and share their experience, it may be the only outlet we have got. It is not about conformity. For those employees who are happy at Nike, bless you and may it grow.
