Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Are our managers leaders ?

We miss leaders in our company. By the way leader wording does not appear in position name.

I have been a manager for many many years and I have always done my very best to support and protect those teammates working with me (I never thought "FOR me"). But, that is not a belief or character trait valued and rewarded in EM. More than once I was told that I was "too nice" or "cared too much" for my team, and that ultimately put a stop to my advancement and dropped me to the bottom of the rank list.

EM saw my style not as a good thing, but instead a weakness. I wasn't the hard*ss the company wanted in senior positions, and I despised the arrogance that EM was so proud to be known for.

My treatment, especially toward the end, was most disappointing but not at all surprising. I worked for many of the senior management that thought humiliating and demoralizing people were the only ways to "keep them in line and give 'em what they deserved - a job and nothing more".

I am not a saint by any means, and perhaps not even a good manager by company standards. But I simply would not treat my folks poorly just to get ahead. I have worked long and hard for many years, but I remain the person that stayed grounded in my beliefs and principles. Don't let anyone take that from you, no matter the cost or reward. EM, nor any other entity, is worth that. I work there, but I don't worship there. I refuse to be what it takes to get to the top of a company like EM.

I’m a manager in disguise. I do what is required to keep my job while doing everything I can behind the scenes to help my team be treated fairly. There are many of us like this. We just can’t reveal it or we will be fired and what good would that do anyone?

I know some who are. They typically don’t last long as they are labeled as not team players for voicing their concerns. I’ve seen older employees say things like we tried that before and this is what happened so think twice only to be cut down for not saying yes right away. They say they want your opinion but they really don’t. Even if you voice concern and then say but I’m willing to support 100% if that’s the decision they will punish you. This is why we are failing. We need 360 feedback for everyone.

They are only doing what they are told. There is no leadership when you will only be punished for independent thinking, and rewarded for saying yes sir.

Most are not. But that is because of the way the existing managers identify who are the next up to be supervisors. Being a good individual contributor does not mean a person will be a good supervisor. Our leadership development programs could help, but all the junior leaders take their queues on how to behave from those above them. The behavior of those above more often than not is the opposite of what the leadership development programs teach. Especially now, with all the stress, most management are defaulting to their bad behaviors. I refer to management teams, not leadership teams.
