We were required to work on weekends or faced write ups, terminations, etc.
Yes it was on a Saturday because there were 2 shifts at the Las Vegas fulfillment center. Sun-thurs and Mon-Friday. Saturday was the only day workers were not at the facility. It was 102 people on the conference call. They gave us 2 hrs notice before the call.
AND I’m not sure why there was surprise at this lay-off for us that worked there. We had plenty of signs for over a month that something was happening, from many people quitting, the erratic work flow, and no announcements about what was happening from any management member.
People are sometimes in denial about what’s going to happen. These companies don’t care one bit about their employees so my attitude is always expect the worst and prepare so you are not caught off guard.
That was the US. Wage slaves who think they're "free". Cue: Hysterical laughter and enjoy that rat wheel. Thank Optum-Saturday follies. Good riddance

Many departments have mandatory weekend shifts. If you are not aware look at some job postings, some explicitly require them to work one or more weekends a month.

Well I doubt it because I cant imagine how they would possibly gather 100's of employees together on a weekend for a telephone conference call. Not only that how many would even be available to join on a Saturday.
Why would anyone doubt that things can occur on weekends? You have little to no employment rights unlike almost every other real country. You are a wage slave with stockholm syndrome if you believe there bs. That is what America does to its employees. They. do. not. care. about. you!
