All of our wages is a tax deduction for UP, all the money they spend on our benefits is a tax deduction, any material or parts bought to be used to maintain fleet is a tax deduction. Every bit of what a UP employee gets from the company is a tax deduction for the company. Now having said that the money they pay a scab shop is tax deductible as well, but the difference is quality, downtime, and liability. The scab shops have to charge alot to make a profit. 20 years ago I had a relative that was part of a management team at a scab shop and back then they were charging $150 an hr for labor plus parts and material was extra. That was 20 years ago and that is about 5 times my wage today. If he were still alive today I'd ask him to find out what they were charging now, I'm sure its double that. Especially with the high demand for it since most RRs are doing psr.
The thing about scab shops is UP doesn’t have to pay tax and benefits to the employees, certain taxes on the materials and the total cost of service is tax deductible. Up front it looks more expensive but on paper it probably isn’t. It’s a sad truth but most large companies are moving towards this.
And the scab shops can't do what Jenks does. Seen so many units come into Jenks that the scab shops couldn't repair or the scab shop started it and it was too much for them to do, or they got into it and were incapable of finishing it because lack of skill, or the work they did in general had to be undone and redone correctly because it was sh*t work.
They finally realize they’ve got to start maintaining their fleet properly and recalling those furloughed at Jenks and Desoto is the only way they can do that. They’re going to spend more money using scab shops to do the work and the turn around time for getting the equipment back is longer then if they did the work at these two locations.
I doubt it. Sorry, up is still cutting every department.
On top of the recall a few weeks back or is this just about that one? I wonder if they're seeing the writing on the wall since the election turned out the way it did...
