Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

So, when DirecTV gets sold...

The financial blog chatter is that T will hold onto the back-haul networks; fiber pipes, sat links, etc. but the operational management will go to whichever Private Equity group wins the bid.

Which begs the question, what happens to us DirecTV Techs?

Are we still T employees or do we now belong to PE Group Apollo or Platinum or SPAC?

Are we even employees or will we be at call contractors - gig workers like Uber?

Are we still Union?

Will we be farmed out with our current pay rate and benefits guaranteed for a year but good luck after that?

401(k) - still with T or only a Roth since the new owner's don't provide a plan?

What logo will be on my van?

Will I even have a van or will I be driving my own car?

Sounds stupid - it is - I could come up with another 50 dumb questions - but someone in either HR or PR will be tasked with answering these after DTV gets the boot - best to prep them now rather than later.

Direct Tv Tech's were sold on a lie. The union tricked them bad. Had them thinking they would make as much money as a core tech makes. Even tricked them to think they would make as much as a legacy Wire Tech/ Prem Tech. Tricked them and told them they would come over to the IP side.

I got a letter in the mail that is a Financial 401k company that says that Att thinks this new company will be best to manage my retirement! It’s pretty much taking us out of Fideletiy!

Several brokerages running scams where they falsely claim that they are working with and "here to help" AT&T soon-to-be retirees and want to meet with you to "plan" for your retirement. Vultures preying upon the ignorant.

There's no affiliation with AT&T. How'd they get your name? They paid a retiree for an email list of all their work contacts.

Around here there is a firm called "7 Streets Financial".

Time to rewind and go back to Ironwood/DirectSat days. When technician actually made money and customers could understand our customer support team.

You will eventually become a contractor like uber and amazon drivers with their own cars. You will be a slave who gets paid by the service call, and have your pay reduced if you get bad reviews. Private equity firms are wealthy predators who hate all unions and despise all union pay and benefits.

Don't care. I'll be retiring in 2021 and dropping all AT&T products. See ya.

Have they given the option to come over to the IP side?. For the DirecTV Tech's?

FUs for the ages. Eric Boyer received a question about all the RS, JS, JD failures. He read the question but was visibly angry that genius T leadership strategy was exposed as a catastrophe.

I suspect this will be lining up as infrastructure as a service or a MNVO model. T will retain all the technology delivery and charge a huge fee to whom ever is foolish enough to buy into DTV.

Buyer will take all revenue related risk and opportunity. Buyer will also get to negotiate programming where all the content synergy with Warner had failed. Nation wide 5g and fiber rollout only means populated areas, will there be a market segment left in the rural and underserved areas, probably. Will this be a profitable venture, depends on who is running the business.

For existing employees on the DTV side, expect deep cuts with sales and marketing, as lean as your mom and pop shop. Techs, you guys might just get the Amazon delivery driver treatment, invite (force) to become independent contractors and get paid per job and no benefits. Oh yea, write mileage and vehicle maintenance as expense. HR will be nonexistent, an outsourced shop will handle payroll and expenses. No technology improvement or upgrades, that will require capital that no one wants to invest. No new satellites, 8k tv, or next generation dish receiver. Set top box and remote upgrade might be possible, customers will pay for those costs.

DTV will no longer be a "premium" product, downgrade to cult status. Your grandkids will think it is da' bomb when they learn you had a part in it, cooler than dial up internet.

Operations staff would go to the new buyer. Sure, you'd still have your union. But it's much easier for the new owner to:

(1.) ask for givebacks. Union disagrees? Well, then you get outsourced to contractors. This is not like AT&T where they have any kind of public image to uphold.

(2.) after a year or two, file for bankruptcy, and then get the union contract invalidated in court

Suggest to look at this as a short-term opportunity only. Have a Plan B.

In most of these cases, anyone who is on Directv payroll company will move to the new company.

I work on AT&T TV at DTV. So what will happen with us? Will AT&T TV be sold with DTV or AT&T hangs on to it and retains us?

All DirecTV tech's should be happy they no longer work for T. Maybe the new company would treat you guy's better.

A more important question after a deal like this, what happens to our benefit of getting DTV service for $10 a month?
