@1cyx that’s just an blanket overall answer. The reason why people originally hired out is easier to explain then why it’s now a horrible place to work that list is much more expansive to explain. Those reasons people originally hired on were the benefits such as health insurance (it’s still good but with ever contract it looses its attraction especially with out of pocket going up) and retirement (which with all the layoffs and shop closings on all class one railroads not just UP and others that are paying into Railroad Retirement most people wonder how solvent it will be in the future).

Thanks. It just seemed odd that people say this is essentially the worst place on the planet to work and yet stay. And the comments have been coming in well before Covid began. They project that they have all the answers but yet have been unable go anywhere else. I was just curious, so thanks for clearing that up.

@ygbf let me help you with that decision on which is worse because it’s both the CEO and PSR they go hand in hand at this point, everyone knows PSR is not viable for long term profitability, only short term gain at the cost of losing employees, equipment, facilities, and customers. As soon as this CEO took over morale started to spiral downward. Management before wasn’t very good but with the CEO and PSR the weaknesses started to show because not all but most of the people they made manager’s had no business being managers and placing those hired from colleges who’ve never really railroaded much less held a job like the railroad in positions as managers with no knowledge of what anyone actually did was a recipe for disaster. What you definitely did get right is the bonus is a total joke 1k for busting @$$ daily when other companies gave employees more then that and are at less risk. @jor most people are still there because they need to pay their bills and have insurance until they can find a better job which with COVID still running rampant is not totally impossible but hard to do since most places are still trying to figure out how to bring new employees in and abide by whatever state government has mandated.

The sad thing is that all of these measures the UP and the rest of the world are doing is clearly having very little effect. Every state has a mask mandate, but yet people are still getting sick including the ones who wear them religiously. If the UP would get rid of their impossible attendance policies, then people wouldn't be afraid for their jobs and STAY HOME when they're sick. The bonus is a good step to healing employer/employee relations, but it's the second biggest joke next to the CEO. Anyone can downvote this all they want. If the UP wants to stay in business, then they better wake up! They need to stop what they're doing and start making the place a desirable place to work again. As of now, no one wants to be there. Customers are tired of the poor service, the remaining employees are looking for other work, and most of the management team don't have a clue what they're doing. The trouble I'm having is deciding what's worse. The coronavirus, PSR, or the CEO.
