Thread regarding Norfolk Southern Corp. layoffs

Recalling furloughed employees

Someone on one of the threads about forced overtime concluded well that as long as the costs of overtime are lower than it would be to recall furloughed employees it will not happen. That is quite clear.

Still, could overtime costs force them to make such a move in the near future? Is it realistic to expect this in the foreseeable future or should I give up hopes? Any thoughts?

I don’t believe in the second option ( that they will recall furloughed employees because the job is not done) because there will always be someone who will cover all the work.

Can’t wait to see how they handle a bad winter. Locomotives do not like cold, and they have everything stretched so thin all it will take is a few weeks of sub freezing weather and snow to put them in a spot I bet they haven’t even considered. Remember several years back when temps got below zero up north and below freezing down south? The whole system was a parking lot. Better pack extra cloths cause we will be living there until it thaws out.

The union is only strong when there’s unity! And there is none!! We need to unify throughout all crafts not just one craft or one shop. This has to be organized from our union leaders in complete solidarity across all crafts and a strike has to be on the table. So just like our forefathers, WE have to be willing to make a sacrifice! Are you? This is what it will take. Money out of their pockets is the only way.

Overtime in the past went in streaks. Times where it was wide open and times where you couldn't get a dime's worth. With people cut to the bone, they're in a bad spot if they try to stop overtime completely like they did in the past. Stuff will just pile up, which can't happen in PSR. When you think about it, the union is stronger if they try and stop overtime.

Once we catch up to CSX's sub 60 operating ratio it'll probably get better, but until that time it's going to be more of the same. Remember squires told the shareholders on the call, they're just getting started.

The union is contractually obligated to perform the work. It may be helpful to read the current contract to determine how much forced overtime is legal for active employees while others are laid off. The total cost of paying a significant amount of overtime is almost always lower than benefits and wages combined for a standard 40 hour week. There will always be some who want all the overtime they can get, and others who prefer to go home after 8 hours, plus enjoy their rest days.
