Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Would you take a pay cut to move to big Tech?

If you get a better opportunity to leave XOM for big Tech, would you take it if it mean a 10% pay cut?

It is a myth that tech works hard. Like any other job some do others don’t. I have friends at google who hardly work at all. Company has so much money they don’t care and accept him as a creative genius who is unconventional.

Yes, without even thinking. In a few years you will be making more. Stay put and each year with no raises you will be making less due to inflation. Add a toxic work environment due to yearly layoffs and it is a no brained. I’m leaving ASAP

If you decide to jump, first research the balance sheet of other companies carefully. Many tech companies are grossly overvalued today, with huge market caps and little or no profits. Many are due for sector consolidations, massive debt problems, and likely downsizings over the next 12-24 months. Don't want to jump into a similar situation as what you are leaving. The entire US workforce is shifting towards manpower being a disposable commodity. Buy it when you need it, fire it when you don't. Sad to say, but finding "good companies" to work for will be an increasingly challenging effort. High salaries, pensions, benefits, etc. are expenses no longer seen as necessary or viable to attract workers, and expertise isn't valued as it once was. Just need a horse to pull the plow. After years in the O&G industry, my advice is to find satisfaction and joy in life somewhere other than where you work. Have a good work ethic, do your job well, but don't expect employers or your job to be fulfilling like it used to be. The world has changed. You are a commodity. Don't sell your soul or neglect your family to get that next rung on the ladder. You are likely not going to find happiness and fulfillment at EM, so don't expect it anymore. Move on if better opportunities are out there, or hunker down at EM in a position that pays well and keeps you off the cut list as long as possible. You can always leave and I wouldn't blame you, but there likely is no panacea out there waiting for you. Good luck to all.

Yes because you'll easily make back that money outside of the base pay and have greater options in tech. Even the "supporting" functions like project managers, recruiters, marketers, etc make a lot of money because of bonuses and stocks. So you don't exactly have to be software eng or IT to make it worth it.

I wouldnt go to big tech for a raise. Work-life balance is priceless and it doesnt exist at big tech.

Is this an emit-oriented question?
4 years in XOM IT is like undoing 4 years of college.
Who'd want that?
As a potential employer, I mean.

Faang pays way better then Exxon. A entry level engineer is probably going to make more than a manger at Exxon.

In a word, yes. What you need ask yourself is, what does your career progression look like now versus what it could be in tech ?

You will more than make up for the pay cut in stock incentives. It’s a no brainer.

Yes. The fact that you consider that this is a question tells me that you can only work at EM as it is one of the few low performing and greedy places left.

Heck no. Not for a pay cut. Big tech, especially Amazon has an “always on” culture where you will be working constantly. I’d take a pay cut to move to a smaller company, or one with a more laid back culture, but going to something like big tech or big 4 consulting should easily command similar pay. Don’t sell yourself short.

Yes! There’s more to life then money but even so a move could potentially offer you Better career advancement down the line. I would move anywhere currently that’s not oil & gas. Mental state and personal integrity and values do matter. Even as a manager I don’t see anybody talking about how laying off people is no fun , or as Exxon Mobil calls it getting rid of “ low performers”. It’s almost like managers from what I hear take absolutely no responsibility for low performers.... in such an environment where collaboration and teamwork are really not encouraged here, somebody in a “normal” collaborative, More caring and innovative environment will really thrive somewhere else. Take the job and you will be happy you did so!
