It is bad enough that cisco is overpaying for these marginal johnny-come-lately security startups, but now they are costing csco more because these startups are not even original ideas to begin with

By “innovation” you mean theft?

It has nothing to do with acquisitions. The one time they “innovate” in house and this happens.

I haven't heard much about ETA lately. Seems like it was snake oil, and fading away. Finding malware in SSL traffic without decryption - seemed a little too good to be true with any efficacy.
