Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

EMIT reduction

Let's face it, EMIT has too many highly-paid middle-management which is weighing XOM down: Advisors, architects (of all types in different capabilities), technical leads, domain experts, specialists, SMEs, managers, managers of managers, SDM's, SDM's of SDM's, product managers, managers of product managers, product owners, scrum masters, etc etc. The ones that are being let go first are the worker bees. It's time to cut on these middle-management!

ITRM's been a major PITA too. World class roadblockers, defaulting to No even when they dont know what they're talking about.

Flatten the CES organization. Truth is, most of the low-mid management staff there are nothing more than paper shufflers and glorified event organizers

Embed business-related IT to respective business lines and call them specialists. We use mostly COTS and enterprise-ready solutions anyway. Completely outsource Infrastructure and desktop support. This will eliminate useless overly compensated EMIT top and mid managers and supervisors.

Complete outsourcing of support and clouding the hardware - needed.
Local tech and helpdesk already contracted.

EMIT 'business liaisons' terminated.
That role put back in the business where belongs.
Maybe agile will work then... external IT teams.

EMIT was a clown.

Plenty of talentless brown nosers here in EMIT making a career out of event organizing under the guise of leadership. Weed these cancerous vampires out.

Scrum masters are useless roles!!! EMIT needs to cut down on coordinators and have more working bees who can do REAL jobs!!! Please wake up your idea!!!!

You folks can blame EMIT if you want, but every single VP in charge of EMIT has been from the business with no IT background. Business people make terrible technology decisions. You can throw all the "digital transformation" you want at a sh–ty business process - and it stays sh–ty. The business has to change first.

Senior management should put their foot down and eliminate those BS local initiatives and events. Absolute unnecessary distractions where positive energy can be better channeled to meaningful work !! Without doubt biggest culprits are the EMIT GBCs competing among each other for brownie points

@fohn+17k5e3yj Sometimes I think these kind of managerial bs lines are actually just projecting your own lack of IT literacy and competency somewhere else as a deflection.

@fohn+17k5e3yj, awww, you are so cute! This was the company I joined 30 yrs ago.. Where we are now it is not about camaraderie, it is about survival. Everything is theater: success theater, research theater, innovation theater... Get out while you still can.

@fohn+17k5e3yj - Animosity because IT is the easiest job to switch industries and get paid well while they're stuck in a O&G. IT for healthcare, IT for autos, IT for retail, IT PM, IT for IT list goes on. Then they'll cope saying EMIT isn't smart enough for IT elsewhere.

I don’t understand the animosity toward EMIT. Sometimes I think the badmouthing is actually just projecting your own inadequacies somewhere else as a deflection.
I never understood the need to trash others. Does it make you feel better about yourself?
I wish nothing but the best for all employees and hope we come out of this mess as a better company that people can be proud to work for.

CDSE and FTP were two major failures and yet no one wanted to admit it. Couldn't believe they were spending millions per month then.

Ironically, many of the track leads are now leaders in the organization. Almost all of them share almost exact same trait - they dont know what they're talking about, let alone managing. Everytime you talk to them it's like you're teaching them something - like a kid. Bunch of proud, ugly high-ego noobs.

Oh dont get me started on the job families. Now that they're restarting it again (how many times now?). Before anything they should first get rid of all those superstars mafias that can't do anything but podcasts. So pointless and you wouldn't believe some of them even have like 100+ episodes. What are the values? What is their job family? Professional comedians? Are we competing with Joe Rogan? Give me a break dudes, you're just worthless NATO clowns, just want to be flying around, celebrate and eat till bellies so round, no skills or knowledge to be found, yet so good at looking people down.

EMIT does a great job of maintaining a fairly seamless standardized GME environment for our users. I will never complain about that. Same with the in persom help desks, they are fantastic.

The problem is that the GME environment needs to be customized for most of our technical staff. And EMIT is absolutely terrible when asked to do anything out of the norm.

Also dont even get me started on agile.

Laptops are laggy because we can’t trust users to not get them infected with spyware and ransonware. Even with all the training, people still fail those dead-easy tests.

EMIT is the most useless department/function in EM, the personnels cant solve IT problems and they make great laptops laggy as hell. We are better off outsourcing than to rely on EMIT, especially the middle management

Moving the architect roles to GBC is good idea. They talk n promise business many things, but make many bad decisions. ruin company projects with lousy solutions, end up delay projects. no one know what they does, maybe nothing

Imagine take the work done by us and sell it like they did it. this is not the culture we want in the company. Just because you can talk and sell, you claim credit for others hard work. this is what middle management do and we get fired for “bad performance”.

What’s obvious is that a lot of EMIT stopped doing any actual work a long time ago. All we are good at is to train a bunch of middle managers to repeat slogans, echo the boss and nod and create fireworks (lots of noise and flash but nothing after that). Zoom backgrounds with company slogan is supposed to signal what? Why need to send emails to ask people to join this AMA, sharing etc? Is this actual work?

And when in the rare event that some smart person does something useful for once, the sharing game begin. Share here, share there. It’s like 1 person make Pad Thai & 5 people hold the plate to serve to the customer to share credit. Worse if someone just grab it and steal credit wholesale just because you’re in the same team.

This company lost the plot a long time ago!

Why do we need different roles to talk to us and go through multiple meetings to get a job done? Imagine 5 x 1hour meetings to talk about prioritisation and value, when that time can be used to complete the said work. Product Managers, Product Owners are just fats that need to be trimmed. Are they truly bringing value or justifying the existence of their roles?

The agile process and organizations implemented in EM are more similar to meat-packing plants than to the cooperative feedback process intended. Cybernetically speaking.

Meat-packing plant maybe a flattery.

I know many technically strong architects in EMIT. The issue is with bloated management. Look at the DevOps teams. They don’t have the Ops piece. Why is this? Is it because it will flatten the company? No manager wants to lose their kingdom. We can’t get much done when we have to get so many managers aligned on a solution. There is no trust in letting the technically strong make the IT technical decisions.

Emit recently created a technical career path (or so they say). That's right, until recently you had no career unless you talked and pushed PowerPoint. Any real knowledge of technology meant a life at sg24. Most managers i ever met openly stated they disliked technology........

Chevron Layoff board indicates 35% cut to IT personnel in US. Already.
Going to external support contracts (MS among others).

Suggestion:
If you make it in EMIT past 1Q2021 - and you have actual technical value - try to get loan assignment in the business you support. 'Embedded' as they say.
Assuming that is still possible and the business needs your skills.

EMIT. wuz a klown.

Fully agree too many useless positions in EMIT. Basically what they do is take the least technically savvy people and name them architects. Then the next set of least technical savvy people are named managers.
It seems that if you actually know what you’re doing, you’ll be stuck doing it forever as a worker bee because most of the others are nowhere near technically inclined enough to do it! Most places reward the smart, technical ones but not XOM! Catch 22 at it’s finest!

Agreed with the last post below. I am on business side and it's very difficult to push what we want because cross functional EMIT teams don't want to work with us. There was this PO in Payables who has been rejecting our requests for 2 years now because it is lower-value compared to their million-dollar higher priorities. In the past we didn't have such issues submitting our requests. EMIT is full of BeeEssess.

the Agile transformation made it worse.... its all fats. SDMs and Agile Coaches,... 2 of the most useless role in EMIT. PI planning means spending more time planning vs doing actual work. all the ceremonies, EMIT spends more time championing the process than getting work done. its all about defending their capacity and explaining why they cant do more, all in the name of prioritizing higher business value work. Get real. back before agile.... EMIT used to just get work done. I am from R&S and when ever i needed some work done, i could easily reached out to my favourite EMIT contacts and get things done and the business was happy, now, they tell me i need to raise the request and go through POs, SM and god know who else to get something on their board..else come back 3 months later.
