Thread regarding AIG (American Intl Group Inc.) layoffs

Leaving AIG

I might be leaving AIG next month. Anything I should do to prepare for this?

I still have a lot of stuff back in the office at 175 Water. How do I get that stuff back?

What happens to my HSA, pension, etc.?

It's been a fun ride AIG, guess my stop is coming up.

Thanks!

Best description of AIG has been a manure pit buried inside a dumpster fire. Management is oblivious to everything. AIG200 is already failing. Only thing working is layoffs reducing cost. New managers know nothing and don't ask about history. Morale isn't good, of course it hasn't been for years. Getting out will be a blessing.

I would request to roll your 401k to either your new employers 401k, or roll into an IRA. The company that manages the 591k now has some legal issues with mismanagement of 401ks with other companies. Best of luck!

You do....but not anything that makes you "mellow"...
A constant stream of Coffee and Tea will get it done.
After 2PM, switch to alcohol.

If you have a new opportunity, take it. Yes it’s amazing when you can get riffed and get a new job to get 2 checks for 6 months but if they don’t coincide, don’t sweat it. You will be amazed by how incredible it is to leave AIG’s dismal culture. Going to a forward-thinking, profitable company that actually respects its employees - it feels like I’m on a different planet after 10 years in the dismal existence of an AIG employee.

I’m worried about pension when AIG nosedives. Is it protected?

Consider searching for a new gig while still employed. It’s a scary time to be out of work. Keep your benefits and security and start job hunting. All hiring/recruiting/ interviewing is remote now. You can coordinate a fairly aggressive job search while continuing your current employment. Better safe than sorry. Best of luck.

Your 401K is fully protected And is yours, even if AIG goes “belly up “ that’s one thing you do not need to worry about.

OP here.

By pension I meant the 401k lol... sorry I don't know retirement stuff that well. But yeah, a layoff would've been nice so I get the severance pay but oh well. Not sure where I'm going yet, but it's time for a change.

Lol, I struggle daily with, is it better to leave now and actually get my pension money out before AIG goes belly up or wait for a possible rif package. It’s a tough choice!

I was told I could get the cash after leaving the company. I want the cash in 401k and pension you can request a payout. Call them so you'll have all your info so when you leave you can take your money with you. I'm older so I want thepension in lump sum. It's not that much.

I was able to get my pension balance out at the end of 2019. I called HR and I was sent a packet which explains all of the possible distribution scenarios. Mailed that paperwork to an address in the midwest and about month later I received a check payable to my brokerage. Felt nervous using the mail but it worked out. Perhaps it can all be done electronically now, but I wouldn't bet on it.

I would be very interested to know how to get the pension out of there. Since it's a cash account. Supposed to be portable

I left in Q2 and they have no plans for how I can get my stuff. I was told to make an inventory and they’ll figure it out soon.

Rolling over 401k was easy - you can even do it online.

Haven’t figured out the pension thing yet.

I am planning to leave and take my pension and 401 K with me. I don't think I can count on a layoff. I wish I could. I'd even take termination.

it will be hard for most people to leave voluntarily in the 4th quarter. the job market is typically tight at year end as many companies lock down their budgets.

good news is that most companies start the year with a fresh budget and job openings so dust off those resumes and get ready for 2021. first quarter is a win win for employees. if you can milk it until year end, you qualify for sti, if any gets paid this year. then you can productively job search in january/february. this is why you see the mass exodus every year when sti is paid in march. if done properly, you get the absolute most from aig before you finally find sanity at a good company.

bottom line, leave now if you can, leave later if you have to, but leave. 2021 will not be a pleasant year at aig unless you are in the executive circle.

I wouldn't leave. Let them give you a severance package. But if you do need to leave, I would contact building mgmt./facilities. I would request if they can box up and mail you at home your stuff. I too have my belongings at the 80 Pine street location and want to work remote going forward even when this pandemic is over. I'm going to do the same of having my belongings mailed to me before the move to the new office.
