Thread regarding IBM layoffs

IBM / Consulting / PMP certification

How important is a PMP certification if you are moving to a manager role and above in Consulting? Is it really a big deal for employers? I feel you pick up a lot with experience and it doesn't add any more value than a tag.

Take all the certifications you can to help you find another job quickly. GBS is already a complete disaster with poor leadership and will be the next business unit run into the ground. Get out asap.

In my experience, I do (or did before coronavirus) get more recruiting calls from other employers because of my PMP, so my personal opinion is yes. At IBM though it has not really mattered. I work with senior projects managers and consultants all the time that don’t have the professional PM certifications like PMP or ACP. So, I think you’ll be fine within IBM. I will say for what it’s worth, I can tell pretty quickly who has a PMP and who doesn’t have one. I’ve also had better overall experiences on projects where the PMs knew the PMBOK. If you don’t get your certification, maybe just read the PMBOK once. It’s good to know in general. You’ll be fine either way at IBM though (other than a layoff). Good luck!
