Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Layoffs at Spring?

I moved from a plant to Spring a few months ago, now worried because I’m hearing rumors of 75% layoffs. Already some of the older people are gone, but hearing that is not enough. I’m worried that exxon will get rid of us less experienced people. Anyone else heard about layoff at Spring? What package will us get if laid off?

I don’t believe the 75% but it seems that it is going to be a very big number, much higher than the units. Everyone at Spring seems depressed like they know what and how much is coming.

I noticed that people who used to talk to me are now avoiding me. I feel like they know I will be laid off. I noticed that there are others who seem to be in the same situation.

Anyone else notice this?

Old people are making the final headcount decisions...just like they made the investment decisions that got XOM in this scenario.

I hope you’re correct that the 75 is made up. I’m worried after reading all these posts but really exon needs to move the old folks out they are the past we are the future.

You want to make the company survive? Delete PowerPoint from the network. Do business like the rest of the competitive world, succinct business emails. Have management that is not afraid to make a decision. The entire company could run on half the people it has now and our internal productivity would be double what it is now.

The company plan employee headcount for YE is already in Dallas. It does not show anything near 20% cuts. Worldwide Workforce counts for the plan will lock in Oct. 2021, 2022 and 2023 Capex and Opex are nearly locked. The prep for Nov Board reviews based on these numbers is underway. No news till after Thanksgiving

Not toxic culture, just reality. Exxon has several “consultants” at all locations who observe what people do, who adds value and who doesn’t, then report back. Look for the person recently added to the group who is from a “good” school, but one that most Exxon didn’t attend, think Case Western Reserve, Pepperdine, Smith, Colby, CMU, Rice, UCSB, Cal Poly, Harvey Mudd, Rose-Hulman, etc. if you are working with someone from one of the small good schools, who started in the group recently, doesn’t seem to have a job, they are probably an “undercover boss”. Look at what area they previously worked and you’ll see where some were promoted and some were pigeon holed or left the company.

Nothing wrong with this system, it is merely a way for top managers to audit lower level managers and supervisors. Also, most competitive companies do it.

it is hilarious how this thread shows just how toxic company culture is.

here we have rank and file rooting for other rank and file to be fired

looks like management is scum because they are being recruited from scummy rank and file

I heard it will only be 75% at the Houston campus and 10-20% max at plants and other field locations. My team was told not worry except for our supporting staff that’s in Houston. We make money downstream and will make a lot more when we cut out the desk jockeys at the HQS who add no value and for which there is little need. Most of what they do is just measuring our field operations and asking us for reports- huge distraction that needs to be minimized!

@1jhc - ha ha ha ha! You have got to be kidding?! Much of EMRE is redundant added cost. How many people are necessary to provide the refinery support you’re referring to - 5 or 6? There are 300 employees in CSR who basically sit on their butts and contemplate their navels all day! No productive output for the last 30 years! The CSR VP is the biggest waste of money of all, closely followed by the LT and FPO VP’s. As for the boss of PRD (“KDR”) - he wouldn’t know how to find his a$$, if you gave him a map, a mirror and a flashlight!!

How do I know? I worked there! Seriously - they could fire everyone in Clinton and survive perfectly well for the next 50 years, by just contracting with specialist companies and universities when support is needed.

I took an early retirement by several years. But, to do so we had to be ‘investment smart’ and live below our means for much of our adult life. Putting your 401k in company stock is risky. All mine was moved to an equity index which was the correct move. I retired from EM ( Drilling) in 2016 with several million in EMs 401k which has grown by 52% since then. In addition, we lived well below our means and packed away lot more $ in regular brokerage account which has done very well indeed over the last 35 years based on a buy and hold strategy. So at this point (70 years old) we are way flush with $ and still living below our means, ha! We’ll be passing a lot of it on to our kids. We will also be funding higher education for all our grandchildren. Life is good. But, I do feel bad for those who have to work in today’s Oil industry. Not good

Houston work study will be out in two weeks. Mid-Nov. at the latest. Seems like they are preparing for a end of 2020 departure.

Anything that shows a lot of worst of the worst ExxonMobil employees will be let loose is good. The sad part is that even with layoff of 50% of the employees, ExxonMobil will be have 50% very poor workers + 1 bad CEO remaining in it.

Major reduction in global projects likely, reduction in EMRE, no way! Without EMRE machinery, the plants wouldn’t be running. We have to set standards, create objectives, perform gap analysis, and assist with repairs and investigations when plant personnel don’t listen and the result is a major screw up. We are not overhead, but add value to the organization.

Some departments / organizations will have a significant reduction. The company has stated that it intends on achieving a 50% reduction to Cost Above Field (U/S) by Q122. That means significant reductions in overhead. Go out and look at EM cost competitiveness at Wood Mac relative to its peers - takes $55 / bbl to be cash flow breakeven. Combination of decreases to executive ranks in around 60% with additional supervisor / manager reductions by YE 20. Salaries likely to be cut along with benefits by YE20 as well.

If you are CL 30+ - get your resume ready. CL27 and below, normal reduction of 10% next assessment cycle.

Will be reductions, but not 75%, maybe 50% overall with some groups higher and some lower. Jobs will be outsourced to low cost countries in Asia, South America, and India. Reductions in U.S., Europe, and Australia, increases in Asia, India, and South America. Move to one of those countries and you might have a job, lower pay, but lower cost of living also.

75% is definitely BS. If DW decides to layoff everybody, he still won't be able to pay the 15B dividend. Our management is crazy.

No one knows the number except maybe the people completing the studies. Quit speculating with stupid numbers (75%) until it is released or leaked.

Lol @ 75% (that’s an insanely high number if the company plans to stay in business), they’d be able to hold company wide lunches for the remaining staff at Applebees

Is it 75% of the total at Spring or 75% of Global Projects and EMRE and a smaller % of other departments? With capital cut back even further, engineering being sub’d to India, and not cutting the dividend, major cuts are coming. As far as moving Spring people to other areas, where would they go when other areas have and are still reducing headcount? Also, why pay the high moving costs when there is no money?

75% is a ridiculous number. If they are reorganizing and downsizing some departments, employees in the top 85% in these departments will be moved to new Jobs.

EMRE and Global Projects.
Rumor is up to 25 weeks depending on years of service.

75% sounds absurdly high to me, especially if you are in chemicals which I believe is still profitable. If the OP is in chemicals, hopefully it is in a product line.

I have heard the same too - mass layoffs in Spring and with mass new jobs in Bangalore and Kuala Lumpur. I also heard standard 3 months pay and free membership at Rights Group assistance for finding a new job. Bad - but what can you expect from such a cruel heartless company like ExxonMobil??? It is smart to start looking for new jobs immediately and even relocate if necessary. Always good to jump of the sinking ship on a lifeboat rather than weight for the big ship to be sunk.
