Ginni was another example of an American company making a social statement instead of what's best for business. Look how enlightened we are, we have a female CEO. So sorry to the tens of thousands of employees that had to pay for it.

I look at the Voluntary separation program as IBM’s signaling that MAJOR changes are coming. 9 months pay is very generous vs IBM’s previous offerings, so they are sending a very definite signal that things are going to get “tougher” My guess is they are trying to tell folks close to the end, “you may want to leave” vs transitioning to the new IBM, as LABOR is going to be impacted. I would expect folks in services will know their future by Christmas. The other portions of IBM that they really don’t want (manufacturing, traditional sales and marketing, overlapping job requirements (Redhat vs IBM middleware), and commodity offerings) are certainly in the bullseye for transition. The new ball game is Hybrid cloud, Redhat, and AI. If you can’t associate yourself with these three engagement processes, it means you are not in scope. IBM is telling you “choose and choose wisely”, because IBM is dumping legacy to reinvent itself. The play has been called, and all should be transparent by mid - late January. That doesn’t mean it will be done, but you will know your future by then

It may not work, BUT it’s the only card he has left to play. Ginni has neutered him, leaving a shell of a company left. Talent gone, debt tripled, investment half, strategy non-existent except for executive payouts and playing follow the leader. The IBM board should be replaced as they slept thru IBM’s demise. Hopefully AK has that in mind as he restructures. He has to play the hand he has, and that revolves around mainframe and its monopoly. Ask yourself where does IBM have a competitive advantage elsewhere Power (Niche), Intel (spun off), storage (commodity), services (commodity), middleware (fading), innovation (laid off), executive management (non-existent), cloud (very late/me too), Mainframe (only player left standing) Play the cards you were dealt

trying to structure a competitive advantage out of AI (IBM research)

This is probably not going to work, for the usual reason: IBM is way behind the big players in AI and losing more ground every day.

This is IBM doing some of the heavy lifting for whoever buys Newco The 6 month of pay equates to approx 13-15k headcount per billion (thus 30-35k if all used for headcount) Europe has said they are aiming for 10k That means there is approx 1.5 billion left for either headcount redundancy, or streamlining (think spinoff/selloff) IBM has made it very clear that there are businesses they wish to exit as they don’t compliment their future vision (Hybrid cloud, Redhat, AI). NOTE IBM is aiming for first world streamlining as “Labor” content has become the differentiator in comparable GTS offerings vs their competitors. Good luck to all as most of the major shifts will be announced by end of 1st q, with execution done by end of 2nd q. Speed is of the essence as IBM continues to fall behind the major players, and time is not their friend. It’s all about the revenue, and IBM has proven for the past 5-7 years they don’t know how to grow it. Like it or not, these are business decisions that should have been made 5-7 years ago when IBM announced Ginni as the CEO. She chose to play financial games vs managing the business, and lack of investment with a serious lack of vision caused her obvious failure. AK looks to be taking IBM in a completely different direction which is a CEO’s responsibility. Run to where the business needs to be. IBM will emerge smaller, leaner, but more efficient and profitable per active employee. Is this the path to success? Time will tell, but it’s the only path Ginni left him. He is exploiting IBM’s remaining monopoly advantage (mainframe), along with their purchased advantage (Redhat), and is trying to structure a competitive advantage out of AI (IBM research). It’s a tall order, but It’s certainly better than the past 24 quarters of a multitude of excuses for poor to zero executive leadership.

I’d take that offer right now if it were available in the US.

That's a no brainer for most there. Presumably, it's statutory minimum for those who don't take this up and end up being pushed?
