Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Is Ibm the worst paying tech company?

Of all the known companies in usa, is ibm the worse paying? for the worker bees ofcourse.
Everytime I see salary info online or ask some friends in tech industry my pay seems to be the worst.
Not even comparing to FAANG pay and successful startups like Uber and Ak's favorite (AirBnB) but i think small companies pay much more than ibm i think - talking about developers at insurance companies like statefarm or homedepot or worse i think maybe even TCS pays more than ibm in usa.

Also not getting a raise over the years means new college grads are earning more than some developers

This company is making me lower class.

IBM = Minimum wage pay in tech?

@4kjv+18AoeerV IBm pay in 00s was probably comparable because even though tech was big it wasnt until after 08 recession the stock price started to explode.

Ibm doesn't give RSUs to its developers which doubles total compensation almost always when FANG is involved.

Ibm top leadership is to blame here completely. They're most cynical people who do fake things like "PMR" which is complete bs.

Accenture is not the only other one that pays dirt in the US, but IBM is pretty close.

So much for the value of mainframe jobs.

IBM's PR machine is strong on this website until someone challenges the salary numbers.

Just look at the 1st two comments about sales people (we know there were legal cases for IBM back stabbing sales people )and the person claiming 55/hr salary.

Even if I were to believe that number (55) how many people actually make that and whats the guarantee they wont be laid off in between a year?

IBM was NEVER the highest paying Tech Company, and it would tell its employees that.
IBM's Claim was that they paid their Employees higher than the average wage for a similar Job, BUT that in working for IBM YOU HAD "JOB SECURITY" which was the incentive for working for IBM and being part of the "IBM FAMILY". I know many people that Envied people that had jobs at IBM back in the Pre-Gerstner days.
Lou Gerstner K–lED the 3 IBM Principles that Guided IBM from its early days. Everything has gone downhill for IBM and IBM's Employees since Gerstner's regime. Certainly NOT something to be Proud of.
The Original Principles are listed below:
1> Respect for the individual.
2>The best customer service.
3>Superior accomplishment of all tasks.

Used to be that Wipro, Infosys, TCS would pay less but I’ve seen a lot of Band 9s and up leave IBM to join the Indian firms and get huge salaries and promotions. Now only Accenture pays less than IBM in the US. Comparing to real consultancies or tech firms like our leadership claims they aspire IBM to be, IBM doesn’t even come close, especially considering the sub par IBM benefits packs, lacks of raises and bonuses.

@3qqw,
Some contractors are paid $55 per hr in GTS tech support.
They receive OT and standby on call pay boosting to $150k range.
Their IBM equivalents were all band 3/4/5 making 1/3 of that salary.
Plenty quit just to become contractors, and who could blame them.

"Contractors in services make 6 figures, which is more than their FLM's are making. "

Would be interested to know what part of IBM that is.

Doesn't seem to be true in the part of GTS I'm in.

Jim Whitehurst is totally useless... the guy doesn't understand technology, he is basically a management consultant.... Give him 2 years and he will not be with IBM anymore.

The stuff JW posts on his Slack channel are so lame.

Every tech company goes through a "maturity" cycle. First it's run by engineers, then by marketing, then by managers, then by finance, and finally by legal.

A good barometer for which stage a company is at is the rising power of HR throughout this progression.

My team routinely loses its best engineers to direct competitors for much more money.

And at the risk of sounding really mean, based on my interactions with RH engineers, they are not hiring the best and the brightest either.

IBM already has a huge turnover because of this pay and and well layoffs and most teams are stuck in the cycle of training new college grads because people with 3-5+ years of experience are leaving as soon as they can.

Is anyone in senior leadership (svp+) aware of this issue? I don't think so because of IBM's top down culture.

Also, Jim Whitehurst was asked this question on his ibm slack channel and his answer was that hybrid cloud will fix it. That's gaslighting and ignorance which makes me think that RH developers aren't paid enough as well.

Total Compensation (TC) at IBM for SWE is literally less than 50% what a sinilar grade anyone would make at a tech company such as Paypal or Vmware or even Ebay (not even comparing at Faang).

Bonus of 1500 or 3000 is peanuts and frankly insulting to employees. I know friends in Finance industry maming atleast 20K even during a lackluster financial year.

I really doubt how IBM was voted top 3rd organization in one of recent polls.

IBM has some really good developers and personnel, sometimes I wonder why they stick with IBM for a really long time (20-30 years).

Its high time IBM changes their TC model or they will risk loosing these hard working SWE to the competition.

Does anyone know how RH employees are compensated ? Are they paid competitively to their peers such as Vmware or others ?

For SWE/developers: Yes. Just plain yes. End of story.
The reason we have so much marketing is because products are lackluster and we need to try so hard to sell them. Compare to companies with great products and less marketing. If you pay product teams better salary to make better products, IBM would be less of a marketing company and more of a tech company.

Change my mind.

those FANG companies pay less to sellers because it's all digital marketing and selling and their products are well known.

However they pay a good amount to developers and engineers to make products and actually have product managers, ibm only has people managers.

This further proves that we're not a tech company

At least in sales, IBM is not bad at all. There’s a reason why people stay in sales at ibm for so long. I’ve interviewed with the other big tech companies snd it’s comparable.
