WTF? Seriously ?

You work. You get paid.
If it's not enough, leave.

Why the gripe?

I turned down the 1st offer I had, which was a great offer, because I thought things would change at Oracle.

Then why were you interviewing if you thought things were going to change? It's a lot of work, going through the interview process, why do it if you aren't really thinking of moving on? Why would you turn down a great offer?

Your story sounds made up.

Nytimes is right. I don’t consider LE or SC to be scrupulous people by a long shot given how they treat employees. That matters to me when I’m considering a job move. Maybe younger people don’t care as much. You have to live a while before you understand that character matters in leadership.

LE and SC given credit for "enabling " recent activity at Capitol all publicity is good, right?

Why am I on this board when I no longer work at Oracle? I don't come here too much any more like I used to do daily the last few years I was there. But occasionally I do just to get the scoop if anything has changed for the better.

I left Oracle after 5 years with no raises, negative incentives, no career path growth, and management who was mentally abusive to me. After almost 20 years working as a Oracle Technologist and what I saw as an insider at Oracle; I decided to change my career path and Oracle technology is not part of it. On top of leaving, I got over a 80k pay increase, stock options and a new career.

I am not saying it was an easy task for me to leave Oracle, because like you, I was stuck trying to get out for several years, but I did it.

At first it was exciting to work for big red, but those 5 years were the worst of my entire career path in the High Tech Industry. What I learned most was how NOT to treat employees.

I turned down the 1st offer I had, which was a great offer, because I thought things would change at Oracle. But they didn't, so when the 2nd one came around at a different company, there was no hesitation,

If you are just starting your career, Oracle may be a good place for you to get some experience and a good logo on your resume. But if you are an experienced professional, and you have other options, I would consider it.

Hopefully things change for the better over time....

Unless you have no other work prospects, don’t take a job at Oracle. Just a few reasons:

  • LE makes the decisions & doesn’t care about retaining talented employees or investing in excellent software.
  • LE & MH destroyed this company w bad management & lack of vision, not getting to the cloud, not investing in marketing or development. There used to be talented people working there but most have left or are in the process of leaving.
  • Terrible company for women - this is the biggest boys club in Silicon Valley.
  • Politics is more important than talent across all levels of the company.
  • this company treats customers horribly. The customers are actively working to get off Oracle products & move to better & more economical solutions.

I am glad to be gone from this dumpster fire of a company. I miss some great coworkers, but not the management. The future road to Texas doesn’t look prosperous for this management team.

“Yes, my job in software support was so easy and I had so much spare time that I spent the last 5 years learning how to trade stocks "on the job" at Oracle. Software support was a mindless job.”

This is sad, really, you like your job because you have nothing to do?

This is what I hate most about Oracle, the people who don't care about what they are doing, just so long as they are getting a paycheck. You can't keep a company functioning with employees who think like this.

It's such a sad place now. People used to do real work. Everyone that I knew, who knew what they were doing, is gone.

The other sad part of this is, Oracle has support people who have no customers to support? Not enough customers? Sounds like a place for some layoffs. No customers means, no employees, just takes time.

Actally, the question when spelled properly, is "Amirite?" (single word)

Actually, the word actually is spelled with a u in it.

We also pay well and we train well.

This is total c-ap. No raises, no bonuses for years now. That's been all over this board.

As for training, there was a post a while back pointing to a review of oracle from the view of a new support person that was absolutely devastating. No training whatsoever. I never received any training when I started there. This is just total c-ap.

Oracle is a sh–ty place to work.

I literally spent a total of 1-2 hours each day resolving customer support issues and the rest of the day focused on stock trading for the last 5 years at Oracle

Another way of looking at it is, Oracle software was so well written that there's no bugs so there's not a lot of support needed. So remember, write sloppy code then you'll have your job. Job security LOL

I thank Oracle for giving me the opportunity to learn a new skill at work while being paid to do so. I really got the satisfaction of getting the last laugh when management kicked me to the curb.

That's how you do it. Make sure to do your job at work but take advantage of the company in your spare time. Keep in mind, the company is a business. When economy is good then it's hiring. When economy is bad then it downsizes. That is normal. Don't get caught in the middle because you'll get squeezed out as extra fat that needs to be cut out. You need to take back your power, don't give it to any company

We are still a top recrutier and top colleges...

We may not be a #1 choice and we may not be hot at Stanford and Harvard but if you look at UCLAs and USCs of the Nation we still hire tons of folks, top talent...

We also pay well and we train well.

Now disclaimer:

  • sr exec s—s
  • the worker is mistreated
  • the company is getting worse

  • This explains a lot about Oracle Support.
  • Investing is much like gambling. Only put up $ you can afford to lose. It’s not a sure thing.
  • There is nothing wrong with working for others. No shame at all. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. What is wrong is giving your labor to a org that doesn’t deserve, appreciate or reward it.

Like the guy below me did, be your own boss and learn how to trade or invest in the stock market. I spent the last 5 years at Oracle learning how to trade in the stock market, all while working in software support. Yes, my job in software support was so easy and I had so much spare time that I spent the last 5 years learning how to trade stocks "on the job" at Oracle. Software support was a mindless job. I literally spent a total of 1-2 hours each day resolving customer support issues and the rest of the day focused on stock trading for the last 5 years at Oracle. Then, after 25 years at Oracle they FINALLY laid me off and I hit the jackpot with my severance package and rolled that money into my trading account. I thank Oracle for giving me the opportunity to learn a new skill at work while being paid to do so. I really got the satisfaction of getting the last laugh when management kicked me to the curb. Bravo Oracle! Thank you!

The correct question should be. Why do you want to work for anyone else? You'll be poor forever if you do that. You should use whatever money you have and learn how to invest and say bye bye to working forever. That's what I did. I saved up while I was working and then I invested it. Now I retired early and don't have to work for anyone anymore. The other option is to be an entrepreneur if that fits you. Investment fits me more so I pick the approach of Warren Buffet.

Everyone wants to work somewhere "better" ... be it better pay, better WLB, better challenges, or whatever.

Not everyone will achieve that.

Find a compromise or just be happy here at Oracle while you still have a job.

Oracle is on the target list of many job seekers. Not mine. But that is the beauty of choice. After a while, you learn to look at the big picture, from the leadership to snacks in the break room. Choose wisely.

You can't make a blanket statement like that out of hand. I've posted this before and I will post it again now. The org where i worked was great. I had incredible peers, great management and interesting and challenging work. Yes, no raises, nickel and diming you to death and other problems systmetic to the company were there but overall my time as positive. On the other hand, I know plenty of people who hated it there, found the environment toxic beyond belief and either waited for the moment they could retire or left out the bathroom window. It all boils down to where you work, the work you do and with whom you do it. I would think there are orgs like that still in the company now.

Would I go back? Not in a million years. I know too many orgs that I would never work in and I would bet they haven't changed. Am I going to trash Oracle out of hand because of my work experience either? No, it was good experience and a part of me misses my co-workers and the work I did, but nothing lasts forever and I've moved on.
