Every time we discuss the overpaid deadwood clogging the ranks of IBM, somebody will always complain about Band 10s, usually lumping them in with management. I always wonder, what is the reason? What do people think Band 10s do? Sure, there are a few in useless "architect" or "CTO" roles, but in my experience the majority are smart and hard-working.
Is this a widely-held opinion, or just a couple of vociferous individuals who have had bad experiences?
While I'm on the topic of unpopular opinions, I also think first-level managers are, for the most part, doing the best can with what they're given. I certainly wouldn't want their job. The problem IMO is in the ranks of Director, VP, and up – most obviously when you have a Director with two none or a VP with two.
