Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

What skills do I need to work at Oracle?

I want to work on Oracle projects but don't know if I'm smart enough.

Such a leading question guaranteed to produce guttural laughter from anyone in the know about the truth of Oracle.

  1. You are perfect if you know little to nothing.
  2. Even better if you are of ethnic heritage, preferably from India as you will be protected by your peers.
  3. You have no expectations of any meaningful reward, salary increases, continued benefit levels, etc.

@Dzuh hope you don't mind me for copying part of your post into a new thread, but your comment opens doors to a whole new discussion that is very interesting to me.

From what I experienced when I was there, lying was the the skill that you needed. People lying and saying they did things they did not. Managers actively working together to lie about people who are doing the work and give the credit to their s—ups instead.

Understand, if you are doing good work, you may not be getting credit for it up the chain of command. I had two managers lie together to give a patent for my work to one of their girlfriends.

My best advice, if you are smarter than average, is to record everything that happens and be prepared to guess when you are being stabbed in the back, because no one will come and tell you or ask you anything about what happened, they will believe the lying scum that passes for management at Oracle.

I would say that it depends on what jobs you are applying for, Accountants need different skills than coders, same with sales and marketing. And even within programming jobs the skills required can vary greatly by the position.

Based on the Oracle employees I have been unfortunate enough to meet I’d say that no intelligence or skill is required whatsoever.

Watch the movie “Tropic Thunder”. Jack Black’s character describes all the skills you need in a scene where he is trying to get his counterparts to release him when he is restrained. Cup Stroke Guzzle are the key verbs. Enjoy.

The only skill I saw exhibited to get ahead was a$$ kissing to one's manager, and one's manager's manager. On the mostpart, they are basically incompetent or over their heads, and selected based not on merit but on connections, so speaking "truth to power" or to point out things that could actually work, doesn't work. Forget those skills right now!! ;-)
So get those lip muscles going!
