Better adjust your mindset now

Hypocrisy is endlessly complaining about a company you call inept and corrupt, yet complaining because they can’t give you a job for life.

Name one oil company that did not have layoffs last year. You can’t.
Name one company that doesn’t enforce their workplace rules, including safety. You can’t.
Name one company in any industry that can survive a 60% loss in value over 6 months and not take dramatic steps to survive. If anything, EM has not done enough yet.

Instead of walking in your office unexpectedly one day and saying you are fired, in the worst case PiP gave you over 90 days to prepare for a new job elsewhere. You were naive if you couldn’t see what was coming. I have seen countless people over the years let go with no warning whatsoever.

If EM can survive this downturn with only a 15% headcount reduction, that will be a surprise. In part, they become so over staffed because they did not lay off people every year, at least the bottom 5%. In reality, 15% is a very low number given the severity of the downturn.

Why anyone that needs a lifetime job security blanket would choose a career path in an industry that is defined by booms and busts for over 100 years makes no sense. Any kind of research would have shown that clearly. Even the thought of a job for life disappeared over 30 years ago. Due diligence is your responsibility. Recruiters always paint a rosy picture. So do used car salesmen. Is this a surprise to you?

Society is changing dramatically, and industries will follow. Soon there will be no difference between employees and contractors. All but a select few will be a workplace commodity. Better adjust your mindset now.

There are a lot of people on this forum claiming EM promised a job for life, even in this posting. Why they would even want to spend their entire career working for a company they despise escapes me. I think it is just a lot of sour grapes from people that like to complain and blame others.

I don't think anyone on this board expected the company to provide a career for life. However, lots of people are pointing out how the company is advertising "hiring for a career" but what they are doing is the opposite. It's a matter of words vs. actions.

I don't doubt the how tough it was for you 20+ years ago but the world has changed. The company management you used to be working under has also changed and it's a new era. We can't take what in the past as an excuse for the present. Just like IT and tech workers in the 70's all suiting up working in labs with chunky computers/equipment, even in a bloody hot place like Texas. We don't see and can't expect that anymore. The world has evolved and so we have. Norms and standards in the past should not be used to impose on what today should be, especially for a fast-changing environment like tech.

I don’t need a lecture on this subject. I am one of those people. Moved 6 times in my first 15 years, 12 in all, not counting several years on single status in hard to staff locations. Yes, some little Texas towns that had bad schools, bad hospitals, nothing to do, etc. Dragged the wife and kids away from friends and family every couple of years. Was very hard on them. Don’t think I would do it again. But that was the patch in those days, a helluva lot tougher than the culture nonsense people complain about now.

But NEVER was anything promised to me for those sacrifices. I didn’t get any bonuses or special salary treatment because I wasn’t an exec then. Later, after years of sacrifice, I did earn some incentive comp. But, after all was said and done, like most employees, got scr*wed several times and kicked out with age.

“Those people” may not still be working, but they are around and see the complaints here and think if these kids only knew how tough the patch used to be. Comparably , today is a cakewalk. I’ve been cursed up and down, and even had a couple of managers physically throw things at me. But I persevered and retired very comfortably. Was a trade off I chose and lived with my decisions. Not fun, not personally satisfying much of the time, but allowed me to provide well for my family then and now, which was my first priority.

good luck finding them. those people did it because there was a culture that people paid you off in the future for working hard for the company.

Nonsense. EM never promised anyone a job for life, ever. They may have said you have an opportunity to build a life long career at EM, which is still true, but obviously with many challenges. Exxon and Mobil combined have downsized over 300,000 employees since 1980, and over 25,000 since the merger in 2000. This is public info which can be found with a single online search. Shame on YOU if you heard what you wanted to hear or failed to properly research the company before hiring on. Even if you believed what you wanted, you should have seen reality within a few months of employment. There are NO lifelong promises at ANY employer. Time to grow up and accept personal responsibility for your actions.

@1vpk+18SKeKSS For those involuntarily being laid off right now, those with highest years of service (around 30 years of service) are being given 52 weeks of severance pay. In contrast everyone who lost job through PIP/PIL in July (regardless of years of service) was only given 3 months of pay. That is public knowledge with all employees.

But yes, you are correct.
At least 25% of employees will enjoy Aramco employment (GOM and south).
And a good bundle to Rosneft (retaining Exxon and Mobil branding rights).

My next door neighbor worked for 28 years at EM. She lost her job in July. She's 50 and they would not make her eligible for retirement. Obviously, it was done through this PIP thing people are talking about on here because she told me she only got 3 months pay (versus the 52 weeks severance that were given to those currently being "laid off.") Really sad because she has medical issues, and has lost her insurance. Cobra is not an affordable option while unemployed. I know this is capitalist America, but it's sad to know these things are happening to the older, long-term, loyal employees.

I hope ExxonMobil has learned a lesson. In the future, just announce a layoff is coming in 60 days with no information regarding size or criteria. Then provide a U.S. standard severance package of 1 weeks pay per year of service and escort impacted people out the door on day 61. Nothing more. Just be sure to call it a layoff. No warning as to who or why, only the timing. Pure, clean and simple. No room for interpretation. That is what people here demand.

Lol. If managers were here to look out for the business they would get rid of the many layers of management fat that do practically nothing for this company. Instead they are throwing out technical people to keep themselves employees (just look at how we awarded stock bonuses for 2020 after taking out loans to cover the operations/dividend).

Of course there will be more layoffs, even if the industry situation improves. EM hasn't even reached the announced 15% reduction yet. You want the company to be honest and transparent, so they much reach at least 15% reductions, or do you not believe in honesty and transparence so much anymore?

Big wow. That is what EM was trying to hide from?

OK folks, here are the difference you scream about regarding the terminology of PiP versus layoff. It comes from ignorance and the inability to accept facts.

The WARN act and other regulations DO NOT APPLY because there are exceptions for unforeseen circumstances beyond a company's control. Think COVID.

EM could have laid everyone off with no warning and no severance whatsoever. It would have been completely legal. INSTEAD, EM offered a PiP program that resulted in at least 3 months of pay and benefits regardless of whether the employee did a single minute of work during that period. If EM had called this a layoff with a 3+ month severance package and the same terms, would that somehow change anything? It is semantics. What you are asking for, an actual traditional layoff, would require NOTHING from EM. Just an escort from the building one day. EM has done this in the past, but chose not to this time. This is not a defense of EM, it is just a fact.

The immaturity and fantasy beliefs on this forum are mind boggling. If a post is accurate, a down vote doesn't change the facts, it just reflects an unwillingness or inability to accept those facts. But, living in a rage filled alternate reality is a choice. Down vote all you want. Nobody cares. It changes nothing.

I fully expect another 10% reduction in headcount this year unless things turn around really fast (unlikely). I understand the disappointment of those let go but managers are here to look out for the business–not workers. Any competent person should understand that.

I've worked at three major oil and gas companies that have all been through layoffs countless re-orgs and each had a general sense of uncertainty towards the future as the markets fluctuated. XOM was by far the worst at managing those factors. I have never seen a more toxic culture where executive management and rank/file employees were so disconnected and at odds with each other. This company lacks leadership at every single level.

Nobody can expect a job for life or to go through uncertain times without some organizational changes and force reductions. However, people should expect a level of respect from their executive leaders and not be treated with contempt, at times. We're all adults and most people can handle tough conversation so long as you're up front and transparent with them. Being intentionally vague and working things behind closed doors just drives the wedge further and further and there is zero trust in the workplace.

You really felt like you needed to post this again? Pip was used to destroy workers careers in the middle of the worlds worse economy since the depression. You publicly threw your people under the bus and shamed them instead of just giving them severance and calling it a lay-off. A lot of them were also lies in by your corrupt management. You are the hypocrite for trying to act like you were doing anyone a favor. You were trying to keep the reputation of not having layoffs which have been hidden for years, it was a facade like a lot of the company’s public image.
