Thread regarding BD (Becton Dickinson & Co.) layoffs

Still struggling

I was laid off nearly six months ago and I'm still having trouble coping with it. I've been with this company for 8 years. I was a good employee, always gave 110%. When I learned I was cut I was absolutely devastated. I still am. This is not even about being unemployed, I managed to find a new job within two months. I just thought I'd retire at this place. Talk about delusional.

I read some of these comments and they ring true everywhere it seems. The layoff comment of once you hit a certain age or time with the company is so true. I've known 3 at my site this has happened to and management is in the process of trying to force another employee out since he has 30ish years. The morally corrupt comment is very true too! Every time I train on C2C ethics I laugh because at least at my site management and HR are the most unethical people I've ever met. The do what is right for them not what is right for the site or business. The funny thing is visitors see it. I had a contractor come into the site and he asked, what's going on here? I asked what do you mean and he said everyone I've seen seems numb and unhappy. Honestly, I was shocked that he saw that within 10 minutes of being at the site. The sad truth is some employees are protected. They can sc--w up by the numbers, not do their job and treat other employees with utter disrespect and continue sitting back without a care at all. I whole heartedly believe in karma and I have to believe eventually these people will get what they really deserve. Our site director does not like negativity and puts up flyers and poster boards about it. My comment is, if you don't like negativity or complaints then do something about it and listen to your people instead of other management and a flunky HR wanna be.

Man up , this working for one company until retirement is a thing of the past. Accept it and move on. I see myself as a freelance merc that will jump ship at the drop of a hat. I don’t get attached to any job or company. It’s better that way. Look out for yourself since nobody else will.

@interested party. I'd look at age discrimination. The joke at this company is once you reach the 25 year club you have an x on your back. Longevity is a thing of the past. All pharma seems to be guilty of this - my neighbor's whole sales team (age 45 and above) was let go last year and replaced with younger employees. he still hasn't found a job a year later.

I am researching companies that have had layoffs in the past year due to outsourcing to other countries. Should I also be looking into this company?

With Biden’s pro union agenda, the 70,000 employees at BD need to band together And get unions in here.

It’s funny I could have written your post myself. I was in that layoff group as well and with with BD for about 8 years. It really is heartbreaking. I had nothing but good reviews and people happy with my work. Congrats on finding a new position. I’m still looking. The good news is no one is going to hold being out of work against you right now.

Might help to change your perspective and consider it a blessing in disguise. I worked BD for a brief period and found the culture to be stifling.

Try getting let go after 17 years. You think it's hard when it happens and you're young, it's way worse when you are older. Companies don't want to hire you after you hit your 50's. BD isn't unique but they fool everyone into thinking they are all about families and they value the employees. In reality, they are no different from any other company in today's world. Really the workers need unions back because they have no protection from poor management and lack of vision.

I'm still employed here and having issues coping with it. Been trying to find another job for the last several months before this place s—s the soul out of me and nothing coming my way. I'm about to start digging ditches just to get away from here.

So don't think less of yourself because of BD. They let go all the good help, the ones that can think for themselves, are not "yes" men or women or question "this is how we always have done it" attitudes that earn titles and pay raises here.

Side note. I never thought working from home would make me see my family less than when I was in an office, even though they are in the next room....

It's never a good feeling to be let go, especially when it's not personal just business. Sounds cold but outsourcing has been the preferred business model for years along with horrible greedy management regardless of ones efforts. You found a job quickly which is gift with so many unemployed & this raging global pandemic, many dead, which has made many people reevaluate what is important and meaningful in life. I don't mean to be a douche but I if I were you I'd be grateful that I found a job and that I didn't waist one more precious moment of my time on this thankless & morally corrupt company. Know your worth & believe in yourself. And by the way, I was let go due to my age discrimination and I see it as a blessing.

You were just a number to them. I was there much longer than you. It’s not the same company it was, they’ve lost their way. Too many acquisitions and not enough time to assimilate people into the culture... just onboard people from other places that value outsource]ing over developing and maintaining talent. You’re in a better place because you aren’t there anymore.

Treat that place like the c-ap that it has become. Kick some dirt on it and move on.

I feel for you. Getting the axe scars one. Being downsized, especially for nothing, no fault of your own, no reprimands, no poor performance review c-ap...just because is hard. The younger you are the harder it is to handle. You give your blood, sweat and tears to a company working hard to make a difference, only to learn it doesn't matter...dust in the wind.

I am glad you found another positions. Many withdraw and/or require psychiatric help, although most will not admit. The typical response is to grab a bottle of vodka and self medicate.

Best of luck in your new adventures. You now have scar tissue and the next time it won't be so bad.
