Thread regarding Macy's Inc. layoffs

Corporate Lay-offs

Just wondering if anyone has heard any talk about additional corporate lay-offs. I’ve heard from some people in buying and planning positions even Ecommerce, that their workload is unmanageable and people are working 12-14 hours a day. That’s crazy from a complaint that was such an advocate for work and life balance. I know times are different but the amount of stress and anxiety that is being left on people doing the jobs of 4-6 people is insane. I can’t see how they are going to eliminate more positions when people are already beyond stretched thin.

You are not alone. I’m NOT a crier at all and I’ve cried several times already because I thought it was me no longer on top of my game because I can’t keep up. I read here and see it’s not me! I don’t s*%k, it’s just too much expected of one person. We have no coverage and my days are spent on the register in other areas and when I’m done there, I go to AYS to spend the remaining little time with them. Sadly o touch base with my AST team like once a week or it’s all via texts and emails. Now, I’m like eff it. I don’t have time to look at power bi, orders, workload planning, etc. it is what it is and I’m not stressing myself out any more than I already am. Hang in there and do the best you can!!!

JG is furious that he is paying people to sit at home so we are getting buried in BS paperwork, forms, etc. to validate our existence. Most of the middle management are inexperienced.

Wow. So any director/ people leader positions who pushed back on reductions during the last huge round of layoffs, have already been added to the list of upcoming layoffs? That’s very scary. Does anyone know if they are targeting certain levels? Like directors and above? Or associate and assistants and above which is pretty much everyone? I have been working from 630-7am in the morning and sometimes I don’t log off until 9pm. There have been times I’m working until midnight. I just can’t get ahead of my workload. Anytime I feel like I’ve made somewhat of a dent, more and more gets piled on. It is extremely stressful and I’ve cried because of how overwhelmed I’ve been since returning from furlough. I don’t like sounding ungrateful because I do have a job while so many don’t but the workload is so insane now. I knew coming back would be a challenge but I feel like I sold my soul to the devil. I would like to hold on because I don’t know what else is out there. I’m hoping with the vaccine, things will get back to as close as they used to be and business picks up again. Hopefully it stabilizes. I don’t know. Maybe I’m being foolish. I’m just filled with so much anxiety. 😓

If you’re in NY and work in e-commerce, check out employment opportunities at Goldbelly.com. It’s an e-commerce platform for restaurants and top chefs for food delivery packages. Great company!

I work in corporate, for ecomm. There definitely will be more layoffs. To the extent & what departments I'm not sure. I have to say I feel a bit better when reading this post only because I wasn't sure if this stress & workload was me being paranoid I couldn't handle the job after furlough or if in fact it really did get more difficult. The added stress of fighting for the company when we have zero control in the end is disheartening, Considering we have not received much product from vendors anymore (and I don't know if it will ever come back) macys is now operating based on private brand focus. This means less jobs, bare minimum I'm assuming as they will tack on more to the ones who make it / choose to stay. I do want to look for a future change /job but I am choosing to ride it out until the economy gets better as I'm afraid I will be jobless longer than I can manage. Everyone I rely on your knowledge to keep me in loop, so if anyone has corporate info ( I work in the photo studio/content) please share.

One of the biggest challenges is that so many of the best leaders didn't make it through the last round of layoffs. Any leaders that pushed back on the huge number of reductions and raised the question of workload on those who would remain were added to the layoff list or volunteered to be added themselves. The company doesn't have any choice, the single largest controllable expense is payroll, so expect more cuts after the holiday.

Best advice for anyone not at the end of their career is start looking for options at other companies. Companies like Amazon have picked up dozens of previous Macy's people, including buyers and planners, many working remotely with reasonable workload expectation. If you are in your 20's,30's,40's or even your early 50's, you should consider alternatives while you can rather than stay with a company that will continue to downsize, increase workload to even more unmanageable levels, and have fewer and few opportunities for growth.
