Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

Google opening up Chrome OS will greatly extend life of aging PCs and reduce need for new PCs

Google owning Neverware (Cloudready) means any PC would be able to install Chrome OS as an officially Google-supported OS on any PC, not just Chromebooks and Chrometops.

This slimmed-down OS would be much less resource intensive than Windows and much more consumer-friendly than Linux.

Much if not all engineering work is done over remote desktop VNC sessions on compute servers anyway (in SC it's all those servers in SC11 if I recall correctly. I haven't seen anyone in SC do CAD work on actual in-office workstations for years). Even engineering firms would need less upgrades if enterprises adopt a Chome OS / Cloudready derivative. I bet business will, just for the hardware money saving alone.

Future trends all point to x86 cashcow drying up for Intel. It's not a matter of dealing with lack of growth and being a "growth company" for stock holders. It's more like stopping the inevitable hemorrhaging on all fronts. Intel is either ending up in ICU or the terminal ward- Choose one.

Media Content Creators: buy a Mac with an ARM
K-12: buy a Chromebook with an ARM (coming soon from gchips)
College Kids: either Mac or Chromebook unless you game, then an AMD x86.
Programmers: have to get a Mac for IOS dev, otherwise Linux box on AMD or Intel
Servers Datacenter: Intel for now, but AMD and Nvidia will continue to eat its lunch

Intel and its partner laptop OEMs are going to hurt bad once the pandemic buying subsides. Bye HP, Bye Dell, Bye Lenovo.

I've never owned a Mac in since using learning how to type on an Apple IIe; current personal laptop is an Intel laptop on Linux, but when I refresh in 2 years, I will go for a ARM M# MBP or MBA. And I'm pretty much an Apple hater who doesn't use iPhones.
