Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Company is in a crisis and lowest stock price in a decade - but here’s 146 new GBS Partners and Executives

Got an email last night: 146 new Partner and Executive promotes in GBS.

Employees in GBS haven’t gotten pay raises or bonuses in years. The company has seen a decline for the better part of a decade. How can they continue to reward incompetence like this? Shameful!

Can someone RA Brooke Marbry? She has no interest in teaming with wider IBM folks.

Found the exec troll, folks. God forbid executives be forced to perform like at other more successful consultancies or tech companies. Staff have families and mortgage payments too, you know. Staff not receiving pay raises or bonuses for YEARS while Band D and up continue to collect huge checks is simply inhumane.

Waiting for the typical exec response...”well why don’t you leave?” They know what they are doing to employees is so wrong it’s criminal, yet they don’t care because their pay is guaranteed. There is no hope for this company.

No salary collected by execs? Clearly there’s some disillusionment here. They have families to support. A band D can be in his or her 30s with mortgage payments to make, a far cry from a millionaire executive. I’m not sure why people tend to blame execs. Some are to blame but others are not. Hood then accountable for their bonuses and stock options, yes.

Personally, I’ve seen my fair share of staff employees that do very little. I think it’s one of the main problems with IBM. Older generation that aren’t able to adapt to new technology and ways of doing agile work. Hopefully the layoffs target those that contribute very little to product or clients. Those people are better off working somewhere that aligns more closely to their goals.

This will never happen at IBM... which tells everything you need to know: they don't care, never have cared about growth... it is all about for them to stay on long enough so that their bank account looks wealthy.

There is absolutely no hope for this company. May be some day it will be acquired by some equity firm, then only it will change.

If IBM is serious about growth, all executives Band D and up should not draw a salary until the desired growth is achieved. They could be paid in arrears then if growth targets are exceeded. Complacency is rampant, that’s why you don’t see any groundbreaking changes to keep in line with competitors and no meaningful growth. For reference: most private held consultancies (including all Big 4) did this exact action this year and had a great result. Their business exceeded targets and now they are hiring in overdrive, giving pay increases across the board to individual contributors, and execs collect checks in arrears that they EARNED. The blueprint is there and it’s simple to implement.

Okay I take back the latter part of that statement. But let’s keep race and gender out of it please. We should pride ourselves on IBM being about equity and inclusion. The majority of the senior positions are still mostly white men.

IBM clearly is not able to pick a winning strategy and so it is continuously reorganizing and trying to reinvent itself. Change or die is the motto.

For the folks that complain about IBM’s decisions... what would you propose IBM does to become a revenue growth company?

Of the 146 you bet 130 are women 10 are people of color? Let me guess, you are a white male that was laid off for s—ing at your job. Like the majority on here?

You forgot:
LATAM - Brazil alone has a gigantic delivery centre
Japan - big enough to be it’s own sales territory after the reorg
Asia Pac- specifically Philippines, again massive delivery centre
Greater China- don’t have much insight to how big this is anymore, but there are several China delivery centres
Eastern Europe- huge delivery centres in Czech, Hungary, Romania, Lithuania, and others

I believe you are off on your services headcount number. They used to be in the 250k range, but IBM has been chopping that number significantly. Currently there are approx 120k in India, 45k in NA, and 30k in Europe. These staffing headcounts compare quite nicely with Cognizant, and Accenture. Yes they have higher Indian headcounts, but their Europe and NA headcounts are almost exactly the same

@1eto+18tToClq GBS + GTS combined is north of 250K employees.

Wonder what the 146 new partners have via skill set. Look no further than this

146 is not surprising. If you believe that IBM is pursuing the fortune 1000-1500’s of the world, the 146 equates to 10-15% of the available accounts. That seems to be approx correct especially when you are changing their go to market strategy (AI, Redhat, Hybrid cloud). What you really need to ask is how many of the previous partners were asked to leave due to IBM not pursuing their skill sets with the fortune 1000-1500. I’ll bet it’s much larger than the usual shrink due to retirements.

No one has thought about transforming IBM this much since Gerstner. Services over all (GTS and GBS) had approx 180k worth of employees. IBM wants 40-50k when all is said and done 90k go to Newco and the rest are RA’ed, and PIP’ed. It’s a big transformation. At least as big as Gerstner 60k RA when he came on board. New IBM will most likely end up around 210-225k

The announcement says more about the large scale transformation we are facing.

LOL! This is IBM all over. Their execs are akin to army generals, gorging themselves on good food and fine wine while outside, the troops are being slaughtered in the trenches.

Bet u dollar to donuts - Out of the 146 promotions, 130 or so are Women, 10 are 'people of color' and the remaining 6 are related to a current or ex -IBM Executive.

A key requirement for promotion to partner in GBS is sales. I work in F&O and I know GBS sales have fallen all year. I don’t see how it could be justifiable to promote 146 new partners when the sales just aren’t there. Something doesn’t add up. I am very concerned from an ethics and integrity perspective.

Looks like business as usual at IBM... therefore, more declines to come...

Definitely not going into the right direction!!

Yeah, minting Partners like there is no tomorrow.

I hope they actually manage to sell something, our pipeline is so dry it's not even funny.

Also, the quality keeps dropping, I remember times when Partners were Jedi... Today, meh...

@qfa+18tToClq not sure where you’re getting your information from but I’m under the age of 30 and haven’t gotten a raise in the 3 years I’ve been here. Everyone on my team is under the age of 30 and none of us have gotten annual raises since we joined. The only raise people got was when we were all promoted last year but it was a pretty small “raise” if you could even call it that. 80% of my team left after that because they were so disgusted.

IBM is giving bonuses, however bonus is only available for college graduates and employees less than 30 years old.

If you want to see where IBM is heading, just look at who they are promoting These folks will end up at IBM (services) not Newco

Retention ahead of NewCo? That's often the excuse for rewarding the management and stiffing the workers
