Thread regarding ConocoPhillips layoffs

Surmont Reorg

Doesn't seem to be much talk in here about what is happening up at Surmont.

100 affected individuals is pretty deep considering the last round of layoffs in 2017.

Who has been laid off? What does this mean for the future of Surmont? Calgary?

One person packaged out so far, TA Superintendent.

This BU has been in trouble for years as management has had their heads in the sand since we started up Phase 2 .This 4B project that cost 9B to build will never payout so drain the swamp and maybe we can finally figure it out.

Is this project even making money. Can we add another one or two for the Keystone pipeline?

If you get enough clowns you have a circus. This place has too many middle management clowns. The circus had run the operation far too long. The time had come to take down the circus tent for good.

So who’s going to purchase surmount from us? It’s next on the chopping block and this is just an effort to polish it up before it goes on the market.

Remove all Supervisors, especially SURMONT LABORATORY. Trained staff dont need a lot of supervisors. Day to day activities run smooth WITHOUT suoervisors and Supervisors sit in their Cabins do nothing.

100 people transfer to Calgary is a long overdue great decision. Reduce the bearocracy at Surmont will lead to efficiency. Beauracracy and the power struggles that follow have been the root to holding back great people and their ideas. Great things to come from this reorg.

Remember this is business not personal. Conoco is here to run a business for profit. They owe you nothing and you own them nothing. S— it up, move on and stay positive.

There has been 5+ layoffs already, volunteers or not.

The initial communication indicated 100 people impacted, 25 of those 100 will be parting ways with the company.

That means maybe 20 or so layoffs yet to come, most likely based on the decisions of those being given an option.

I suspect many contingent works will be released.

February 8th will be an interesting day, it will be our first look at what the new organization looks like.

Job security? Was asked to transfer a couple rounds ago and then they let the entire team go 8 months later. I would not count on job security in Calgary.

So the choice is between -40 C and no job vs. Chinooks and job security. Very difficult to decide..if you ask me.

Can anyone confirm if relocation assistance is being offered to people moving to Calgary?

Feb 8th likely to be the worst day. Thoughts?

I hope they at least offered relocation packages for those being being asked to transfer.

Today was the day for communication for the 100 people who will be transferred to Calgary. They have the option to go or leave. They can make their decision by the 5th of Feb. On the 8th of Feb, is going to be the new org chart roll out and the day they call for layoffs. I heard 25 people will be laid off. From what I understand the 100 who get the Calgary option aren't included in the 25 layoff number. I have also heard out of the 100 who got the option, there are 5 that said no thanks already. So the total number of people leaving the company is more like 25+

Good people will go. Buddies with no skill or value stay. That is the Surmont way. Life will continue. Good luck to all up there.

Surmont will continue to produce 145k a day, and nothing will change. S—s that people are losing their jobs, and s—s that a lot of people will be forced to either hit the unemployment line, or move to Calgary. Dunno if any of these moves even move the needle on budget?
