i’ve been through several layoffs in my time and they can put whatever they want in a severance agreement. If you want your severance, you have to go by what’s in the agreement. If you have to stay in your job for a couple weeks or a couple months, then that’s what you have to do. it s—s.
Your severance is yours once you receive it. I’m using March 1 as an example termination date in the info below.
-
If you are hired by a new company before the end of your termination date (march 1or earlier), you don't get the severance because you are still technically a employee until that date.
-
If you are hired by a company after your termination date (march 1 or later), you get all of your severance.
Talk to HR if you have specific questions about your situation. I recommend applying for unemployment with your state as soon as possible. They can give you the most accurate information on when you can start getting unemployment. And don’t forget to submit your severance paperwork by the deadline.
