Does UP look good on resume?

The funny part for me was when my current employer asked if it was as bad as he had read and heard about. I didn’t give much info, nor did I have to. I wanted to ask him how he found his information. So getting laid off, getting fired, or just not applying to this company probably helps the resume look better. Good luck to anyone that is still there.

(I’m not familiar with this particular case that someone wrote about in @qav+19CVzo7H, but from my experience I can confirm that UP doesn’t look good on resume, no matter how hard-working you may have been. I would love to hear more experiences.)

Of course it looks good on a resume! It looks great, in fact. The entire railroad industry has been devastated by PSR and everyone knows this. They know it's not your doing, and they know it's a great opportunity for them to pick up talent being driven out a poorly-run company. UP on your resume opens doors. Take advantage of that.

Basically it’s up to you to convince them why they should hire you. What are you trying to do? If you’ve been a conductor for 30 years probably don’t apply for a job as a brain surgeon. If it is a job you are qualified for then explain your qualifications in the interview. Interviews are a lot easier to get than jobs, so you’ll have plenty of opportunities to explain why you’re qualified. No one is going to give you a job or deny you a job because you worked at UP.

Having a major class 1 on a resume at one point used to look good, but who in the right mind actually quit a good paying RR job?? People have now left this job to get away from it all now. The class 1's are in complete disarray from what they used to be. Everyone knew what PSR was, and what the outcome was going to be. The executive team is unbelievably ignorant with the thinking that it was somehow going to transform the company into the best RR in North America. They are now the winner 2 years in a row for worst employer. What's even more irritating is how the CEO can publicly announce how proud he is of the employees with producing record results, and not seem to give a damn about the people that were laid off. This is the exact reason I quit, because management didn't give a damn about anyone except themselves.

I wouldn’t say it looks bad per se, but you’ll definitely from my experience get the questions like “how did you survive?”. I will say it doesn’t look good either. Best you can hope for is to break even. It’s not like anyone is going to be impressed you worked for UP that’s for sure.

If you are working and trying to quit, it looks good. You are willing to leave a good paying job for a better life. If you are furloughed, it s—s. Every employer assumes you will go back if you are called.

Very true. I worked for UP for 12 years. I had enough when they forced me to start from the bottom again because of greed and layoffs. I put out my resume to several companies and got out within 6 months of psr implementation. Don't stick around at that place. They've proven to their employees they cannot be trusted regarding job security. If you're going to start over, do it at a different company. You know what UP is now.

Actually my experience is opposite of what you wrote. Things have gotten bad for the UP employees with the layoffs, but your work isn’t a reflection of upper management. I was offered multiple positions when I put my resume on Indeed and all of the hiring managers were complimentary of my roles and work experience. Why would any company looking to hire good employees look at Glassdoor reviews on the CEO and upper management and discount the employees that have nothing to do with the companies direction? There are many great employees at Union Pacific. Don’t let someone discourage you in your pursuit of a different career by telling you that you are somehow tainted by working for UP. This simply isn’t true.
