Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

What is your ideal work culture?

For me, decentralized command where individuals are empowered and and back stabbing is shut down when people go to management to gossip. A “deal with the person directly rather than come through your boss” style of unity is best form my experience.

No people change and culture doesn’t. Companies and individual sites have personalities despite turnover.

There is value in having processes to follow for work, but taken to an extreme it can also shoot you in the foot. Placing people in sandboxes and limiting their scope of work or responsibilities hinders collaboration caps profits as well.

A work culture where team work is rewarded and high responsibility is given seems ideal. It is my dream.

I also like a decentralized structure that puts an emphasis on ownership and accountability. If you slip up then you own the mistake and make things right. If you knock it out of the park then it's clear that you're directly making an impact and you're recognized for it. I jumped ship to a mid size petrochemical company after XOM and I knew from the interview that it would be a better fit. The work is fast faced, the people are high energy, and management keeps just enough slack in the reins to let us do our jobs freely without losing control.

Current one just works fine .. look at other companies on this board and you soon realize that folks just like complaining. Any culture is made up of ppl. You are part of that ppl. 90% of interviewed ppl would say they are perfect, others/system is flawed. Look long and hard in a mirror — you are the problem, we are the problem. Just be nice and work well id–t.
