Thread regarding Nationwide (Insurance and Financial Services) layoffs

Automation

People are afraid of automation because it takes their jobs. I wonder how many jobs will be affected by automation at Nationwide in the near future?

I also found out last Tuesday, just 1 month shy of my 14 year anniversary with NW that my position had been eliminated. AI is here, it is real, and it is being used. The pandemic has accelerated automation by about 2 years, the future is here....

The problem with AI is that it is a black-box and that is a major problem. The only ones who know the programming are the ones who program it. Plus any number of issues surrounding bias can creep in and cause major problems.

Personally, I think the changes to automation will happen slowly and gradually. In 2017, the Japanese replaced human claims adjusters with AI. That was four years ago. Are there any major carriers using AI to replace human claims adjusters in the US now? If there are, I’m not aware of them. The technology is here, but I don’t see it being used in the industry. I guess that implies to me that there may be problems to work out behind the scenes that are not being shared with the general public.

Outsourcing claims adjuster work is not possible. You have to be at least a legal resident of the US to obtain a state license.

It's not just automation that people need to be concerned about . It's also outsourcing. Allstate for example is outsourcing much of their claims jobs to India.
