Quit trying to copy-cat the big Cloud leaders and go back to being Innovators and flex our muscles where we're strongest. Stop treating Systems like 2nd-class citizens and learn how to sell direct again like we use to. No magic wands thinking BP's will fix everything and dump all sales / support and service staff. Maybe hire Steve Mills back and learn how to sell and develop SW again too.

IBM is not, for most, a career company anymore. They pay lower in the accepted pay scale and your reasonable working life expectancy with them is low. If you're there now, learn something supremely marketable and hit the eject button when you can find a better gig is my advice for a less stressful life experience. I'm now wondering if the 'made men' in safe exec positions will now have huge blue targets on their backs. If you want to remove bloat, that is a target-rich environment.

IBM has already planted the flag for the next 2 years 4 billion in restructuring costs in 2021, and 1 billion in 2022. Restructuring at its basic level is cost take out which means do more with less.
So let’s look at the divisions and you decide if they are going to get more or less stressful

  1. GTS = body shop If you’re competitor will do it for less, you must match. Unless GTS has some magical technology that they have not deployed to make folks more efficient in the body shop game it’s more of the same.
  2. GBS = find a partner to do the ISV heavy lifting while they propose hybrid cloud. Partnership means less heads not more due to sharing the risk
  3. Systems = ride the legacy IP and patent portfolio Can you name anything IBM has introduced due to innovation from systems group in the last 10 years. IBM buys their innovation and squeezes the rest of systems group to pay for it
  4. Cognitive = REDHAT and legacy SW rewrite/front end/modernization If you are good at those three things, it might get less stressful, but the legacy IBM cognitive/SW/Cloud products must be replaced first, and the heads associated with those also must go. That means more stress for a while.

I expect IBM will not settle down ever due to competing in a commodity infrastructure market, and price will always be the leading decider. IBM is trying to make the case for NICHE Hybrid infrastructure, but remember rule 1 Price always wins

You yourself have to make it less stressful because they keep piling work on people who do it. Learn to say no, get a dr's note if you have to.

After that update your resume, LinkedIn and look elsewhere. I don't see anything changing at ibm - it can get uglier but not better

It won't. The genie is out of the bottle now in the sense they've treated staff like disposable dirt for too long and got away with it. Any organisation that prioritises 'shareholder value' over brilliant products, client satisfaction and a motivated workforce effectively digs their own corporate grave as is being borne out. It's incredibly painful for me to say this but where I once felt unmitigated pride as an IBM'er, I now regard my former comany with total disgust and embarrassment.

When and if top management gets a clue. When and if IBM has an actual strategy that lasts more than one quarter. When and if IBM delivers a product that the market is willing to buy. When and if that all happens, then maybe IBM will stop treating its employees like farm animals and the workplace might become less stressful. That won't be soon.
