If you're laid off you get a nice severance to tide you over until you can find a new job. It's not ideal but it's certainly not as bad as being fired and having nothing to fall back on. Get out of your doom and gloom mentality. Is this what us Husky folks can look forward to becoming now that we're a part of Cenovus?

Best post I’ve read in months. Indeed folks that have been golden played for years shall stop whining
Only an HR drone would post this kind of thing. Can’t wait until it’s your turn, maybe you will find out how long your package lasts.
Oh I don’t know. Most people are upset that our management are hypocritical dirtbags. Ten rounds of layoffs since 2012. You name any other company in Calgary that has done so many rounds, hint there are none. Every year for the last 9 years there have been layoffs (sometimes twice a year) and lies so many lies. No more layoffs, oh wait we didn’t mean it. This latest round is during the biggest pandemic in our lifetimes laying 2,000 people off. But you’re right what is so different about Cenovus. There is also the $30M in bonuses mgmt just gave themselves while laying thousands off. Oh yes and they lied about that as well. First they said there were no retention bonuses but then got found out by people posting here and they had to change their answer on the FAQ. There are also the nonstop promotions within management while laying people off.
You are a management troll if you are this stupid to not realize no other company has treated their employees as disposable garbage since 2012. Don’t forget the Conoco purchase which will go down in oil patch history as one of the worst business deals ever done. It will be a case study in what not to do for any future management team.
Cenovus was voted one of the worst companies to work for in 2019 across a huge selection of international companies on the Glassdoor for a reason.
Feel free to leave yourself. We won’t miss you.
The people posting on here all have a bone to pick. Most have probably already been cut and are just trying to make everyone else as miserable as them. Perhaps their hatred for the company was evident and their downfall. Who knows. @pxb+19VAYs55 Lists all the places cutting jobs or no longer hiring, but for some reason CVE is the devil for doing the same. I don’t take these posts seriously. They are just venting and trying to get the venom out of their system.
People are cranky probably because they are probably really kicking themselves in the a@@ hole because they took on too much debt buying a 1mil house in Lac La Biche or Edm/Calgary and thinking that oil is what they love and will never change - well from many years of experience I can tell you oil is an up and down industry and you need to run thin at home at all times saving for those very rainy days. Hate to say it but thats just the way it is folks!!. What you should be doing is living low, saving high. Ok now you guys can hit me hard on comments, BUT I think you know I`m right.
Got it??
It's because everyone is blatantly seeing this time that it's the hard workers that get shown the door. If you have to do layoffs fine, but don't concentrate the stupidity everytime. Cenovus will collapse and people aren't allowed to do anything about it because of higher ups milking it... it's the sheer incompetence at the top that everyone is cranky about
as for severance, if you have room in RRSP you can contribute and avoid taxation, probably you will even get a refund. Talk to your accountant.
But seriously, all Cenovus employees got used to work from 11 to 4, having meetings and discussions as a half of the day, and the rest of the day spared between shopping in TD Mall and attending gyms, having luxury salaries of double of what they would be paid in normal industry. Some of you had 6 or even 8 weeks of vacation, you were paid bonuses like 2 months of salary or even more, some of you worked at Encana and had 30 years of doing the same work. Life was too easy for many of you. You got severances plus 1 year of EI, for the next 2 years you can find something to do in your life. Stop crying like babes, there are so many unemployed people whose EI is almost finished, and they are in much worse situation.
The severance seems like a big number.
After you pay taxes it will be smaller.
If you have looked at job listings on the various websites like Indeed, it's easy to see why
people are cranky. T
he reality is that most of the people layed off will NEVER find a comparable job in their lifetimes if they stay in Calgary.
That's why is is so important to NEVER accept the first severance offer.
The only jobs available in Calgary are for shipping and receiving and driving forklifts for $15 /hr.
Grocery stores aren't hiring as 99% are union shops that only give jobs to their friends and family.
Retail is decimated. Walmart ( a non union shop) isn't even hiring as they just announced a store closure in Calgary and have 700 employees that they said will be offered in it's other stores.
Amazon hired a bunch of people before Christmas for work in their warehouse of which a number of Oil and Gas Industry workers I know got hired. Amazon is no longer hiring.
You will soon find that having any Oil and Gas experience on your Resume is more of a detriment
than an advantage. Companies outside of the petroleum industry and especially ALL HR PEOPLE have the impression that former Oil and Gas people are entitled, overpaid and will flee once the oil patch starts hiring again.
Once your package is all used up you go on pogey for 6 months and then after that you enter the painful world of homelessness, foodbanks and welfare.
That's why people are so cranky.
