I wonder what you think, was there any way to avoid layoffs at GM or at least keep their numbers lower? (and at the same time keep those at the top satisfied)

Yeah, it's called attrition. Don't rehire for positions that are going to be cut. Replace a retiree with somebody who is already employed with the company. There are many ways, though, you can't present that to shareholders or stoke fear into the people that you are trying to dominate that way.
No one at the top is satisfied, without layoffs. These are corporate wh–es for money, and money dictates.
If GM has recently hired many in the last year or two, maybe three, layoffs are absolutely certain. I'm glad to be beyond this. Not only do we get an extremely healthy bonus, we can't find enough people to fill our need.
That's how you know you are worthwhile.
