Thread regarding Follett layoffs

Valued Employee

i was furloughed by Follett in the Spring due to Covid. I was looking for work the entire time but due to the pandemic the competition for open positions was fierce. Many applications went into a black hole, no response. But I did not give up, I kept plugging away. In December I had four (4) separate interviews with one company. After all those interviews I thought I had a good shot, But then they ghosted and learned a month later that they "went in another direction". But the good news is that I did get hired in January by a great company that values my skills and experience. So......don't give up. Keep looking, keep networking. There are good jobs out there, you just need to keep trying.

I am in the same position. It is a scary period when news updates about department replenishment take on shrill angry 'you are all to blame for this!' tone in poorly edited engrish. I agree with everyone else though on stating that you are enough as an employee, maybe you've forgotten over the years, but there are opportunities and options. Does your University have any night courses or community focused course work? I still believe that the work many of us do lends itself well to database work, and SQL might not be unobtainable. I don't like feeling like I have to retrain, but am doing so. It's a hard time, you are not alone in that.

We are all sorry you feel trapped after 9 years. follett has been awful for most of those years. With out being invasive or indelicate, can you access help assessing your skills.
Today things are very hard. There are 10 million unemployed who may or may not be brought back to their former jobs.
During the several years before, the US was at or near full employment.
If you need help seeing yourself as useful, worthy of work at a non-abusive employer, find that help. Then start answering hard questions; can I relocate? Am I willing to relocate? What situation is ideal (you took a "job" with follett and 9 years later you can't settle for a "job" again).
You can rebuild yourself. It will take time and effort. You can do it.

I feel stuck here as well
Not many job opportunities out there
I look on Indeed often ( even at work )
I’ve checked with the college I work at at nothing available here that I could do
I’ve been here over 9 years now
It is not the same. Even before COVID Things were starting to change.

follett is the only employer? There isn't a college or university in town? Local/state government isn't present? If follettt is it, you have greater issues to deal with than working for a terrible company.

This depends on where you live. Some of us live in smaller towns, not cities. Jobs are not plentiful unless you have experience in medical billing or medical field. Some of us are literally stuck.

What skills caught the employers eye? What did you offer that caused them to interview/hire you?
