Farewell after 25 years. & Some Advice

I’ve decided to move on after a great career and journey with VZ. It’s been one hell of a ride. I will say hang in there to everyone. Here’s a few observations and predictions:

I started my career with Nynex. My work through the years during the biggest merger in US history was my greatest time at VZ. The building of LD and Global Networks was a master of endeavors. CEO Ivan Siedenberg was the last true genius we had. He implemented what this company does best, building a reliable network. That includes Wireline and Wireless.

When Lowel Mcadam took the reigns he destroyed the culture. He treated his employees like c-ap. He listened too much to the shareholders instead of just believing in what we do best. He tried and failed at so many new products like Go90, Iptv, buying yahoo and aol. He tried so hard to get us into “technology” but we are not a technology company. We were not founded by guys like the founders of Google or apple. We’re a telephone company. Lol I don’t care how many folks you hire from India if you don’t have a leader that has vision you can forget about it.

So let’s look where we are at. We have zero content, some customers have Fios some don’t, a terrible tv video product, and a CEO that really wants to change the culture and make it better. But here’s the problem, Hans doesn’t know what the culture should even be. Yes we should all be nice to each other and good employees but what exactly is the strategy? You can’t just shove political correctness down everyone’s throat. And It’s great to have multiple revenue streams and other products but you have to do it right. Super bowl is a prime example. We hosted a concert for small businesses that was a production disaster. It’s embarrassing. Where are you hiring these people from? There is like no creativity at all. And whoever that guy is on social media that travels around finding creative people is horrendous. This is what you call content?
You can’t take these same employees that literally have been micro managing workers like an assembly line and expect these cats to have any hip ideas or offer anything to boost the culture in the direction you want to go.

So advice is just stay a good telco co. Unless your going to buy something great like Disney or Netflix which btw I think you lost that chance, just stick with what you know and keep the dividends. Good Luck

I left in 2020, was hired by NY Telephone, and saw the disintegration of what was once a truly great company, exactly as the OP said.

The greatest change was that in the beginning there were so many truly brilliant people working towards the betterment of the company. We actually still had the remnants of Bell Labs, and you may laugh, but “Ma Bell” existed. It was family, and it was pride Can you even imagine having pride in your company now? I guess it’s possible, but it would take effort
Now, all that matters is rah-rah meetings, and singing the company song.
Truly disgusting end to a one time giant and leader of not just it’s own industry, but all industry.
It’s death throes are horrific.

I took the offer in December 2020 and retired after 38 years as a Central Office Tech. I agree with everything you said.
I loved my job but it was time to go. It was a good thing since they allowed a third of the COT’s to retire, and now I see that COVID is spreading through my coworkers.
Retirement during Winter and in a Pandemic hasn’t been too exciting, but it sure beats working!

McAdam ruined the culture Sidenberg created which was next to none and he never took the two warring kids wireless and wireline and forced them to play nice. Sidenberg talked about his vision which was so far out there all the time but he did it. I have seen no one capable of creating that vision and executing since. He was already in the next thing before the current products were saturated. He had loyalty and we all jumped. It needs to find leadership with vision again and stop please with hip. Your not hip but you are reliable and deliver.

It is too late. Things went downhill fast when wireless merged with wireline. Blowell bought wireless at the top of the market. And then Verizon told it best to leave and never come back by offering a VSP and by accepting it, you agree to NEVER work for Verizon again. Who does that? Such arrogance. This company has no path forward. There are three choices:

1) Milk it until you get a tap on the shoulder. Good strategy for those who are close to retirement.
2) Do nothing and be upset when they kick you to the curb.
3) Be proactive and leave now before it gets worse. Because it will get worse.
