Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Abundance of deadwood and lack of talent

IBM still has a lot of deadwood that needs to get trimmed but at the same time it desperately needs to hire talent, those two times don't seem to match but they actually do.

IBM has reached a point where the really talented ones either have left or hanging around to close up and retire or are just loyal and wishfulyl hoping for success. At the same time, the weak ones, deadweight, know they can't get past an interview and if they did actually succeed at a good competitive company; therefore, the deadweight stays put. Then add in that IBM is no longer one of the places that the top talent are trying to get into like it was way in the past.

The results is that we are people short, talent limited and many lacking the desire because they don't feel how what they do fit into IBM's plan. Perfect world get rid of all the deadweight and hire in talented focused engineers/programmers.

@2wwt+19kSip8h hits the nail on the head.

"...pretty certain you just described Bob Lord's entire org"

Bob Lord is a twit that has also done nothing since he's been here. When is his turn to go?

“Show me the incentives and I will show you the outcome.” There is not really good or bad employees, anybody can do great work if only that gets rewarded. Keep the same incentives, even though you've replaced boomers by millennials and zoomers, you get the same results. Insanity.

I couldn't agree less. IBM spent a decade buying back billions of dollars of stock, in an attempt to double the stock price. This is the only way that leadership knows to increase stock price. A complete change in leadership is what's needed.

I think it truly changes org to org. The org I was hired into was full of dead weight - folks that had no ability to execute basic functions of their role.

It was also full of passionate, capable individuals who were often misguided and sometimes coached to engage in hostile/toxic behavior.

While the dead weight was recognized, management was encouraged to protect head count. Positions were also often filled with literally the "best of worst" candidates out of fear of losing that hiring chit.

So, you have an entire org with either talentless individuals that were falsely lead to believe they were vital and incredibly capable in their roles. Mismanaged genuine talent that often resorted to toxic behavior to perpetuate agendas that were not IBM-first and making dangerous compromises with hiring.

While I have yet to experience an org yet that achieves that same level of incompetence and questionable ethical decision making, I have certainly seen shades of it elsewhere in IBM.

Legacy leadership and management need to go. That's what is holding IBM back and Jim's push forwarded. They have no desire to upgrade anything...ie Lotus Notes, MSS (QRadar), and stupid Wiki pages.

The root cause of IBM's management issue is brilliantly summarised in this video.

No need to worry. IBM wants to replace you with "new collar" workers - No experience required. 6 figure salary guaranteed with promotion tied to failure. The more you fail, the higher up you get. Brilliant !

Nobody should get stock. Only options. In fact, the execs should be given a minimal salary, and lots of options. This creates incentive for the stock price to rise.

Maybe start by giving raises and bonuses based on merit and not limiting stock to execs?

As soon as IBM gets someone with talent, In a matter of months that person is already thinking about getting out of the company. lol

this is spot on, but it is very difficult to attract talent these days. It is not only a matter of compensations but company's prospect. Maybe when/if the company starts showing some growth, until then... very difficult
