in CA, yes any hours classified as PTO will be paid out. Sick, floating holiday, and that United Way half day will not. So suggest if you get a layoff date and you work in CA, use up all your sick time, take the floating holiday, and United Way half day. Use it or lose it!

Yes! I was part of the Corporate Marketing layoff. We had a 3 months heads up. I hoarded my PTO like nobodies business.
California is a very liberal state. We pay very high taxes. So at least we get our PTO paid so of course you can pay taxes on it. The more money the company pays out to employees, the more tax the state gets.
Now in other states you get zero PTO. Does not sound fair for national company to allow different benefits for employees across states. But that is not the case. No one gets PTO paid out except when state law forbids it. So the benefit is the same for everyone except where it is illegal.
Oh yeah it does. That's why I didn't take vacation. I love California!!
