Severance pay/ unemployment

Someone had already asked, but there was no answer: can we file for unemployment if we get severance? That interests me too, does severance affect unemployment and how? I was laid off and received a severance package, and now I am afraid it will prevent me from being able to collect those benefits. Tomorrow I will look into this in a little more detail, but I would like someone here on the forum to give me some advice because I would not want to lose unemployment.

In Iowa you can file for unemployment and receive it right away. Even though you are receiving a package, you are still eligible in Iowa despite what the company tells you. I know this because 2 former colleagues did it the last time they offered packages.

I am an X Kellogg’s Rep from Pa. You can collect unemployment with your severance. File for it ASAP so you don’t lose it, because I know someone who did because he didn’t know to file.

You do have to report the severance in my state. What I learned so far is severance will not be paid for 60 days and then in a lump sum (said in letter that went out). Government is more complicated but I understand you can not get unemployment until a certain time after a lump sum depending on how much it is and what you made. Regular unemployment is maxed out at $300 a week. That is $15,600 a year. I forget but I think it last 6 months or 9 months. There maybe extra money for unemployed with stimulus plans? I think it is not in effect anymore but not sure and might be started again as next plan gets passed. You will be taxed on unemployment also so it is not much help. Hopefully somebody at unemployment office can be more specific but I have found they are not much help.

Most states won’t pay you if your still getting severance you have to wait tell your severance ends to file unemployment

It depends how your severance is paid out. Lump sum or payments.

Not sure what state you are in, but if you have been laid off you CAN file for Unemployment and should! No, you do not have to reveal that you received a severance package, since it's none of their business. My advice would be to file unemployment as soon as possible since you may have to serve a "waiting week before receiving benefits; throw your severance into your savings account until you NEED it.

You have to wait tell your severance is all paid out the file for unemployment. I think the only way you can file now is if your severance is less that what your state pays either way I would want tell your severance ends to file
