New Sears Master List- 32

Since no one else seems to be doing it anymore, I've created a Sears Master List, in the style of Jack's KMart list.

There are now 32 non-liquidating Sears stores. Additionally, there are 4 Appliance & Mattress stores, 3 Home & Life stores and 10 Stand Alone (or soon to be) Sears Auto Centers. That brings the total to 49 unique locations (combine that with KMart and you've got 72). For the auto centers I relied on Cody's list since auto center closings are usually harder to verify and Sears has kept some open even after closing the Sears stores located next to them.

Um, there have been more than two bullets discharged when we're talking rounds of store closings.

Burbank Sears is still open? Amazing. It's dodged the bullet twice.

Regarding Eddie Lampert's quote further down in this post, he referred to "customers" instead of "members". Isn't that punishable by termination? Hahaha!!!! Even HE can't remember to call them "members".

Just for the hell of it, I looked into the count on the Hometown stores. The Sears Hometown website claims 304 locations, but the Sears website claims 313 locations. And there are stores on each of them which are not on the other, so have fun reconciling the two lists. And if you want to take it a step further and make 300+ phone calls, be my guest. There were 491 locations when Sears (technically TransformCo) repurchased them less than two years ago.

So you're the same assclown who keeps trolling about the Brooklyn Kmart. This guy and Jack spent the time to put together these lists which are excellently done. I don't see you calling any stores, just telling other people what to do. Why don't you call them? I guess you have to ask mommy for permission to use her phone first.

Good, if they will never be part of your list, then your list will never be accurate. If you don't understand that, then your mentality IS that of a 5 Year old. Sears Hometowns are exactly like Sears Appliance stores and that's why they should be counted in the list of small format Sears.

There are Mcdonalds Express locations, and they are counted in Mcdonald's store counts.
No way of verifying which stores are still open? Your phone doesn't work? Hey, just like with that Kmart list guy omitting Brooklyn, if you want an incomplete list, then have at it. Just realize that it is incomplete and I will call it out as such.

Yes, I do understand what a franchise is, no need to explain it to me like I'm 5 years old. The comparison to McDonalds is not valid anyway. All McDonalds have the same menu, Sears Hometown has limited merchandise, its more like a hardware/appliance store. Since Sears reacquired Hometown, many of the store owners have been getting screwed, mostly because Sears doesn't give them inventory, so believe me they've been closing rapidly too. Also, I have no way of verifying which locations are still open. I doubt the Sears website is correct. They are not even up to date on some corporate locations, not to mention the fact they still list Sears Outlet stores which have all been sold and rebranded as American Freight. Hometown will never be part of this list.

Hey man, it's your list, so you do you, buddy. Just not sure why many make a distinction between corporate or franchised stores. Let's Say we were making a list of all Mcdonalds in the U.S.. Just about all of them would be franchised, but of course we would still count them. Let's Say Fred Smith owns a Mcdonalds in your town. When you go buy a Big Mac, you would Say I'm going to "Mcdonalds", not "Fred Smith's restaurant". So these Hometowns are still Sears, regardless of which franchisee owns them, much like your local Mcdonalds is still a Mcdonalds, regardless of who owns it. If you go to Jim Greene's Mcdonalds in the next town, you are still buying that cheeseburger from Mcdonalds, and you would still Say "Im going to Mcdonalds", not "I'm going to Jimmys burger shack"

Let's Say John Brown owns your local Days Inn motel. You would Say I'm staying at Days Inn, not I'm staying at John Brown's hotel.

But as stated, it's your list, so do what you want with it. But bear in mind, that without including Sears Hometowns, it's not a complete list of Sears small format stores, because Sears Hometowns, are by definition, small format Sears.
And the kicker is that those Sears Hometowns, might be around long after the trivial amount of cooperate stores close down. Because the franchisee likely has an agreement to use the Sears name for quite a while, they might decide to keep running the stores, especially if they are in remote areas without much competition. Time will Tell.

So with the closure of the Merritt Island store and the correction of my error with the Naranjito, PR store, we are now at 30. I will wait at least a few days or until the Marlborough store is further confirmed and then update the list.

This list is for corporate stores only. I'm not including Hometown, those are franchised stores and its unclear which are still open, but I can add a note about them. Merrit Island is now confirmed via Sears jobs site. I will not be removing any other until they are verified via Sears website or media reports.

One quibble. There are 100's of Sears Hometown stores also. If you don't want to include them, that's of course your choice, but they are small-format Sears. You might consider including in your footnotes the fact that you are not including those stores. While they are franchised, so are virtually all fast food restaurants (like Wendys, Burger King etc.) yet we still include them in store counts. So there are probably over 100 Sears Homestowns small-formats, missing from this list.

Awesome, buddy! You have the List Man Jack's seal of approval! I Love the format, buddy. You are carrying that mantel quite well. I really dig the statistics section at the bottom! Good job!

Appliance & Mattress and Home & Life were two different attempts by Sears, separated by several years, to establish sub-chains of small-format stores. I haven't been to any of these, so I can't say what differences there may be between them.

I was not aware that the Naranjito, PR store was not a regular Sears store, the Sears website makes no such distinction. After researching it, it appears to have opened a few years ago, its only 3,000 sqft and sells appliances and tools only. In future lists I will list it separately. Also, is there really any difference between and Home & Life store and an Appliance & Mattress store (other than branding)? Seems like they're exactly the same thing.

On June 7, 2005, Eddie Lampert wrote: “We believe that management will optimize the company’s performance by an unwavering focus on managing the business, serving our customers, and working to constantly improve operations. … Of course, the proof is in the performance, but we believe … [we] can help focus management on running the business for the long term benefit of all shareholders.”

The result, 32 Sears stores on their way to zero. Eddie is right, the proof is in the performance. And this says a lot about Eddie’s performance.

I posted a reply here about the Naranjito, PR store being a small format and not a full-sized Sears store, but it got quickly deleted. I don't understand why.

Naranjito PR may not be formally branded as "Home & LIfe" or "Appliance & Mattress" (or the Spanish equivalent), but it's a tiny storefront in a strip mall, 3,076 square feet according to TransformcoProperties.com . It belongs with the other small-format stores, not the full-line stores.
