One Self-Learning day per week - Warning of a lay off?

Hello,
I have recently received a message from my manager saying that I could take at my convenience a day per week for Self-Learning time, which means that I will not be receiving new requests on that day. This comes in a time when we don't have a high load of work, and in the message, there is no mention of a specific end of the period when this Self-Learning day will be no longer available for me. Could this mean that it is a warning and I should expect to be laid off in the future months? Has this practice ever been encountered in Oracle before for other employees or could this be a preparation for my future laying off?

It could be an honest warning from your manager. Depends on what kind of person your manager is and what relationship you have with them.

There was a manager who told some of his reports they could take an afternoon off to go do whatever they wanted. Then he turned around and told the other people he had no idea where these employees had gone and that they were slacking and just taking time off without any permission.

You can't trust the management, you have no idea what his/her goal actually is. Get someone to work less and make them look like they are lazy, then lie about what you told them later. You can get someone who is not s—ing up enough on the lay-off list that way.

So they figure they have 20% excess capacity. What do you think their next move will be after giving it this "trial run"?

A few years ago they had a big internal job & training fare - a few weeks later, thousands of layoffs.

I assume that you are a support engineer who will not be receiving any SRs during your day of training. Make sure you update your GRP so you don't receive any.

Unless your training/learning will involve other products that you will soon be supporting, I'd take this as a bad sign of things to come. There were a lot of EBS support folks that got let go last July and whoever was left behind were consolidated into other groups and had to take SRs for other EBS products going forward, hence the extra training required.

I think you can move to Fusion SaaS support if you want to stay with Oracle.

The previous poster meant for you to bite your claw on the way to the escape hatch.

Since you mention you won’t “receive requests” on training day I take that to mean you are a techie who is in sales. Word of warning, if you and your team are sales support and are not 110% “busied out” 24/7 then your team is about to get hit, hard. Plus, if I’m your boss then I’m sweating bullets now too since it’s my job to make sure all my direct reports are effectively (I.e., not just 80%) utilized.

Bottom line, this is a very bad omen.

Hardware had something like that just before a round of layoffs I think. It was "spend an hour a week learning".

Just use the day to update your resume, reach out to recruiters, and learn skills that can be used in your next job. I second taking more courses on LinkedIn and highlighting the accomplishments in your profile.

Take full advantage of this. And get out as fast as you can. If this were a weather warning it would show a hurricane.

Mayday!!
Run directly to the escape hatch and eject! Bite and claw your way there if you have to.

Don’t hesitate and don’t deviate because it’s time for yet another “fun” game of musical chairs!!!

The writing on the wall seems pretty clear to me if what you say is true. . You should be very worried. Your manager should be very worried too.
