For now I am safe but after one of my colleagues was laid off, for whom I had a lot of respect because he was a top expert, it was a signal to me to speed up job hunting. However, I gave this company a lot, maybe more than I was paid and I concluded that before I find a new option I should reap all possible benefits here. I don’t think I'm a bad person for wanting to take advantage of this situation as much as I can, because this company has taken advantage of me and my colleagues for long enough.

Wait?! Someone here suggested we take the 10 days of emergency sick leave... can we do that if we have already been given our walking papers? Wouldn't they just move up your separation date? It's a great idea, but I'm assuming they've thought of everything. Does anyone know for a fact?! Thank you.
If you can hang on, ride it out and get every cent you can from these b–tards. That’s money that deserves to be in your pocket, not theirs.
Your thought process is entirely correct here. I have colleagues who put in 60-70 work weeks. One has over 20 Sick Days banked, and didn't even use all of his Vacation (his state can carry over up to half). I cannot, for the life of me, understand that mindset. It hasn't gotten him promoted either, even though his skillset should put him higher.
Does it look bad to go on Covid leave if you’ve been laid off ?
Take your 10 day Covid leave, they don't request the test results. Make sure you take all your sick leave and vacation, because they don't give it to you when you're let go
I hate to say it but you almost have to keep yourself marketable at all times. You're never safe regardless of who you are or your position.
