Work-life balance

Is it just me or is work-life balance completely disappearing and morphing into a never-ending loop of work and sleep? I'm single with no kids so I can still take this but I have no idea how my colleagues who have a family are able to deal with this. This easily explains the growing attrition and loss of some of the best employees.

Not sure what the complaints are about. I sit through 6 hours of team meeting everyday with all my left over collogues. We go over the list of projects that sales keeps insisting are going to happen (even though most of the gas processing and refining projects are in the toilet).

Every now and then we'll sit through a week of re-orgs. But rest assured all our you (including me) shut down at the normal closing time. Rinse repeat...

Hey SW industrialist, that is truly one of the best posts I've ever seen on this site. Well done, mate, well done!

Once upon a time, in Honeyland, everyone in the kingdom had "Defined Benefits." Everyone, including the Serfs, cherished them and was willing to work longer in Honeyland to get more of them. Then one day, Mr. Finance complained to Mr. HR that those things the Serfs loved made Mr. Wall Street very unhappy. When King CEO heard this, he commanded Mr. HR to, "Fix it!" That night, Mr. HR penned a nice story to tell the Serfs about how they could now take as many days off as they want, as long as their Serf-boss said it was OK. This sounded very good to all the Serfs, and no one was sad to see those old "Defined Benefits" go away. This was because many Serfs had dreamed of long vacations at the beach, or hiking or skiing for weeks in the mountains! But before they could save enough money to go away on those trips, a terrible plague came upon Honeyland. The plague kept the airplanes from flying, products from selling, or rulers from receiving special money favors. The plague resulted in many Serfs being told to leave the once prosperous Honeyland, and to take their things away in a free paper box. In the end, so few Serfs remained in the kingdom that none were allowed to leave work, even for one day. And, since those old "Defined Benefits" were no longer around to protect them, a great darkness settled over the kingdom. Serfs began to speak about the "good old days," while others spoke secretly among themselves uttering the "U" word. It wasn't long before Serfs were not as productive as they once had been, and then work hours increased by more and more. Then the beatings began, being inflicted on Serfs who fell too behind their goals. When the King heard of the trouble his ungrateful Serfs were causing, he looked across the sea, to other lands of which he had heard, where the Serfs do not complain about time off, or low pay, or long work hours, and he gladly asked them to be his Serfs too. The King quickly built his new Serfs nice buildings in which to stay, and gave them special things to keep them happy. While in the old kingdom, his Serfs were kept under the rod until more smiles were seen and fewer complaints were heard.

King CEO enjoyed all the praise given him by Mr. Wall Street for a job well done. The King was so happy with the things done by Mr. Finance and Mr. HR that he rewarded them with many gold coins and long vacations in exotic lands.

Honeywell sends out emails about work life balance, maybe makes a video or two, then says, get back to work or else or here is a new pile of work for you - get 'er done. You get that email late in the day Friday about something that has to be done. so you have to decided if you will work it over the weekend or wait to next week. I choose to work it M-F (most of the time). I do work almost every weekend and night - the easier stuff, a few hours here and there. If you get all the work done you will just get more. Honeywell does not give a sh*t about you our your life. So you have to make that decision. You think Darrius is staying up late and working every weekend?

Which is worse? Outsourcing the Honeywell work or outsourcing the raising of your own kids.
I know my answer. Many opportunities to become a director but always say NO because the financial reward will never be enough.
Do you have children is my first quest for any new VP. It is a trick question..
if you say no.. then I am sorry for the hole in your life...
if you say “yes I have a 14 yr old and a 10yr old” then i am sorry for the children and the poor choices their parent is making. I simply cannot respect a Honeywell VP who has small children.. you made the wrong choice. If your children are grown and you don’t like your wife? Good for you.. be a VP. We won’t remember your name when you are gone.

Fight for balance in your life, you are all driven by the daily mission and used to absorbing stress but that means you need more time with your loved ones, not less

I have many kids and refuse to work lots of OT. If you don’t respect yourself, nobody will respect you.

Much of Olathe has been on mandatory 25% OT and/or weekends for months. Of course, if you take a sick or vacation day that week, you are working those extra hours at straight time. Since they never put it in writing, I wonder if it is even legal. Under these conditions, maybe it's time to go back to union representation?

It's not just at Honeywell. It's EVERYWHERE in the tech sector. Even small companies.

Corporate 'merica can't let a good crisis go to waste.

Don’t worry brother. I feel the same way. I’ve got a pile of kids. And all I do is work and sleep. If it wasn’t for the pay, I’d be out. It’s a sad world we know. I see so many other good co workers going through the same.
