Yes, he was a horrible CEO who almost single-handedly managed to destroy this place, but what are the chances that whoever comes after him will be any better? I doubt they'll look for anybody progressive with new ideas to replace him. I think they'll just put in charge one of the usual suspects in the industry who work hard to preserve the status quo. I hope I'm wrong on this...

He should hire a crew and clean house. A lot of pests and parasites need to be re-homed.
It's the OG industry... what progressive ideas? Literally every operator of equivalent size is roughly the same, varying only by the quality and mix of assets they hold and their balance sheet. It's a commodity business, everybody is producing the same product, only with different costs & logistics that have more to do with the location of assets than with how creative the company is. (I suppose at least McClendon was at least creative with unsustainable fraud)
Your next CEO will not be much different than the previous.
