Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

Where will you be when (if) the time comes for autonomous trains at UP?

I also think that the story of autonomous trains is still just a fiction for UP, but that they would definitely like to automate everything that can be automated. That story isn’t happening yet so I don’t think you need to stress much about it, but you should have a clear plan for yourself and get out of this ridiculous company.

Union Pacific has invested in the autonomous truck company TuSimple. Autonomous trains are already being used in Australia. The only thing that might slow or stop the autonomous transition is if Union Pacific merges with Norfolk Southern. Norfolk Southern’s progress is about 10 to 15 years behind.

Oh no you mean I’ll get to go back and exercise my conductor rights. Don’t forget engineers all go back to conductor when they can’t work as a Engineer. We’ll still have jobs until all jobs are eliminated.

Who cares? If it happens it happens. Most people that are left at UP already have one foot out the door anyway with either retirement on the horizon or actively looking for other jobs. Why do you think everyone is here on a layoff board? If you think a job with Union Pacific in 2021 is stable by any means then God help you.

It’s happening, probably in the next 10 years. There’s nothing you or I can do to slow it down or stop it. Advances in technology are happening at a tremendous pace and will take over the industry. Sorry to all the naysayers but autonomous trains are on the horizon and in the near future.

Not in my lifetime! Maintenance practices at Union Pacific is going to be the downfall for them! Nothing but juuunk on the rails, deferred maintenance , dwell time , waiting on parts, federal wheels, just trail it we’ll get it next time! No autonomous trains in the near future!

I’m going to ride on the autonomous train and eat a big fat juicy hot dog. Can we convert the big boy to autopilot? Let it go and fly free! Expose it to the world!

You are living in fantasy land if you think autonomous trains are fictional. UP and the other railroads have been working on this with various contractors for several years. The software is pretty much in place to run the trains now in conjunction with the energy management systems and PTC in the major routes. UP is also working with contractors on a new form of traffic control involving a rolling block that allows multiple trains in the same block with the trains software communicating between the various trains there locations, speed, etc. The military uses a form of this with planes and ships so the software is tested and works well. I know there are skeptics when anything new is happening, but this is real and when it happens it will have an enormous impact on the railroad industry.
