Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

How do we get rid of people without calling it layoffs?

There are "layoffs" here every day, constantly. Even though I haven't received the official layoff notice, every day they’re sending it to me in much more subtle ways.

They actually do everything to get rid of a certain number of people, and to make them leave voluntarily so they don't count as official layoffs. The constant deterioration of working conditions is nothing other than a subtle way of dismissing people.

On the flip side of that scenario, I’m contributing very little, productivity extremely low only busy around 13-15 hours per week and my job is very safe with little or no chance of being laid off! That goes to show you how completely oblivious to the working ranks management in this company really is! There’s very little work, but management doesn’t seem to be looking at our business unit for any productivity numbers, go figure?

That is the most mo--nic statement I have heard to date; "If you are working and contributing to the company, you don't have to worry about layoffs" A colleague of mine responsible for delivery of a $220M revenue project delivered on time and on budget was laid off two months after the last release. Colleagues from my last position three years back who were constantly delivering and all had advanced degrees were outsourced and rebadged to IBM and eventually laid off from IBM a little over a year to the day they were outsourced. Their work was off-shored to IBM India. Give me a break please, do you really believe the cr-p you are spewing.

If you really aren't doing any work, you are probably in upper management and taking credit for those below you.

People can be considered meaningful contributors to the team, for years and then when upper management decides someone is getting laid off, someone will go. That decision has nothing to do with contributions to the company. So but for some upper management decision that his numbers aren’t good enough, most all these people that are eventually laid off were considered meaningful contributors. Don’t think because you think you are a meaningful contributor to your team you won’t be waif off. And conversely just because you don’t contribute quite as much as some one else will you be laid off. Someone will be gone irrespective of contribution. Contribution is not a criteria for being saved or let go.

Layoffs aren’t hitting every business unit! My organization has been slower than a snail race in winter and we’re not having layoffs anytime soon! There’s very little work and management seems to be OK with it...go figure!

To  @zzi+1agEPtig: Congratulations on the stupidest comment of the day. Contribution has nothing to do with layoffs and it is entirely a cost reduction plan.

Outsourcing, cutting benefits, lack of advancement... Never underestimate the ability of this group to make life miserable.

If you are working and contributing to the company, you don't have to worry about layoffs. If you really aren't doing any work, day after day, it's coming.
