Thread regarding IBM layoffs

What to do?

There are few things I hate as much as somebody taking credit for my work. Two coworkers and I brought a long overdue project across the finish line just to see our boss tell his boss it was all his doing. Is there anything we can do in this situation? Should we speak up or keep quiet? Is there any way to ensure this doesn't happen in the future?

Hopefully no one thinks this is unique to IBM.

Dude. You must be new or very young. Managers at IBM always do that.

I doubt your boss's boss believes that your boss did the actual work.

A good manager will pave the way for (shield from irrelevant BS) their underlings to do the work, and they deserve credit for being a good deflector shield. But a good manager should also be touting the work of their underlings and giving them credit for that work.

Time to find a new manager... or may be just leave IBM for better pastures.

As far as not speaking ill of your manager... who cares, you will end up getting laid off anyway at some point. If you think sucking up to your manager will save, you are wrong. Your first line manager is not the one deciding whether you stay or you go. I never let my manager tell me what to do, and I sure do point out to him every time he does something wrong. Enough of these useless stupid managers. I have done that for the past 20 years at IBM... still here... but I will get laid off like everyone else in this company. In the meantime, I truly enjoy giving c––p to management.

IBMers, it is time to raise up and fight!!

Yeah you can definitely do something:

  1. Document everything you're doing, email your manager or maintain a running document with your manager signing off periodically om what you did.
  1. Seems like your manager just wants credit for your work so set up a meeting with either a skip or vp or both and let them know how you guys did the work, make a presentation etc.(Sometimes managers are tight with skip hence vp). However don't speak ill of your manager and don't antagonize them, just showcase your work to vp and skip bec your manager seems like a politician and will retaliate.

Do the point 2 immediately now and point 1 for anything in future.

This happens all the time. Managers have to look relevant even when all they do is slide shows and Checkpoint time wasters.
