Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Why?

I see so many people who seem way too emotionally invested in Exxon and what's been happening in and around it and I have to ask - why? Why would you get emotionally invested in a company you didn't start and you don't run? What do you have to gain from that other than extra stress?

In my experience, the loyalty and ownership invested in the company comes from the days of recruiting "for a career" and the commitment the company made to "weather the down times together" as well as "rewarding those who worked hard and followed the rules". It created an atmosphere of a relationship beyond that of a simply job and paycheck. A mutual commitment. It took a while to work through those feelings as I was leaving. Understandably strange for some to understand. I had trusted that deal, and believed that was the type of company I wanted to be a part of. I may not love every role I was put in (usually with 0 choice on my part), but I was in it for the long run, and the relationship as a whole was valuable and rooted in (what felt like) mutual values. That commitment was broken gradually over the last 7 years or so, and then all at once during 2020. The company has every right to redefine that, but they can't be surprised when the other side (the workers who were in it for that value) leave or shift to giving the minimal output to get by.

The workforce has a front row seat and a sensitive bull..it detector. Leaders talking the same talk and then exhibiting behavior that's so misaligned is what is angering those remaining. To answer your question, many feel they gave and continue to give a lot of themselves to the company. They accepted compromises in exchange for something that has evaporated in front of them.

It's easy to say "they shouldn't feel that way" or "it's just a job", but to them it wasn't. They see an investment that has soured and now won't pay out. Something they have already sunk personal time, effort, and compromise into.

Well, don't. Those who do have a right to do so. Allow each to own their own feelings and you can go ahead and continue your bitterness, which, frankly, is gaining you nothing.

Complacency and fear of change is the reason why. It's a normal human trait and we all have it. I got laid off a few months ago and it took that to force me to get out of my shell. Live and learn is all you can do I guess.

Exactly. The ONLY advantage of being a replaceable employee is not needing to worry about the business. People are fooling themselves thinking they can predict and anticipate the moves of XOM or any other company for that matter.
