The title says it all. I was laid off last week after six months with Oracle. Why even bother and hire me? Why let me go through the training process (as poor as it was?) I can't imagine that this was in any way beneficial to the company. So can somebody please explain to me what happened? (I want to reiterate I was not fired for poor performance, that I'd get. I was made redundant.)

Never relocate without an exit clause with compensation, including moving expenses, etc. I worked for Oracle for many years, I was offered VP position with salary increase in happy Cali. and would not relocate. It was not worth the "politics" in the office, nor the downsizing of housing, nor the cost of living. When your young you believe meetings are important, titles are important. But it is all bulls**t.
Now get back to work, and polish that pre-meeting powerpoint, for next Tues. And have GBU revue and comment on your font's and colors, don't concern yourself with content.
Just repeating what @2zxu+1b1muqww said.
Someone made a plan to do something and you were hired to do it, and they got a bonus for doing that. Then someone else made a plan to cut costs and they RIF'd the whole group including you, and they got a bonus for doing that.
“ Someone made a plan to hire someone to do something, and probably got a bonus for doing that. Then someone else in the management is looking for a bonus for cost-cutting, so they axe a group.”
When kids do this we call it musical chairs. Great for a 5th birthday party. Complete embarrassment when a mature Corp with adults in charge play those games.
What was the layoff package??
I wish I could get one of those juicy layoff packages
Note most times they keep the new hire (ie lower cost + more up to date skills) and fire the older team member.
Depends who is making the decision, how many suck-ups there are in the group, etc.
I know a group of people OCI laid off after 6 weeks.
Wow, it's a sign of the inner turmoil and cluelessness going on. Oracle hires and fires because they have no real long term plan and because the management is always playing musical chairs. Someone made a plan to hire someone to do something, and probably got a bonus for doing that. Then someone else in the management is looking for a bonus for cost-cutting, so they axe a group.
It's all about how the management looks at any given time. No long-term strategy, just what can I do to look good for just the next couple of months.
Outside of management, there is no reason to work at Oracle. There are no long-term secure jobs here. Don't take a job at Oracle! Word needs to get out there.
It was you, or one of their friends!
This is it. The new guy will always be the first one gone, regardless of any skills you might have.
A lot of times a group will have an opening to replace a person that left. The group itself do not want to lose that spot so they will aggressively hire. However the powers above will then force the group later to cut and thus the unfortunate will happen.

People relocated and get lay-off within a year,
And that is why you never relocate without certain written ironclad guarantees. And not just Oracle, any Company. If they balk at all, move along and keep looking. Make sure you understand all the risks before you dive in.

Duuuuuude….consider this a GODSEND.
SUCK IT UP AND GET A BETTER JOB. YOU WILL FIND IT.
Sorry to hear such sad news. Hopefully you'll find somewhere else where they'll treat you much better.

You didn’t do your homework before accepting the job? People relocated and get lay-off within a year, this is norm at Oracle with such great leadership.
You must be new here . . .
