My friend is considering quitting his Oracle job. He plans to give his manager an one month notice. What are the chances he would be terminated shortly after giving the notice? And would be that termination considered a layoff (with severance) or firing? In case he would get fired, could he get unemployment benefits? The location is California.

I quit without any notice what-so-ever. Very satisfying. You should try that.
I've seen this happen a couple of different ways at Oracle (US location)
- Person is joining a competitor and gets "walked out' as soon as they give their notice
- Most often they will let the person finish out the week
- Rare case is that they honor the two weeks notice. Usually if the employee is a great person and has kids or something like that.
One month notice is unthinkable.
You must assume that the day of giving notice could be your last day.
It does not work like that … if you give 1 month notice , I will come back and give you a rebuttal for a two week notice. At that point you have no recourse and you are done in two weeks.
I would say one week is plenty. I have heard that they do not have to accept any notice you give and one month is waaay too much.
There is no reason for him to give more than two weeks notice; in fact, these days it is risky to do so.
I made that mistake once. Not with Oracle, mind you but another company. I gave two weeks notice. They asked me to stay three. Bad move. By the third week They piled onto me like I was pack mule. The first three days, I stupidly worked myself comatose, by the fourth day I shut down and basically mailed it in. I should have stuck with my two weeks.
I tell people, two weeks and not a day more and do not ki-l yourself. What are they going to do? Fire you? Just make sure there is a transfer of information. After that break off the rear view mirror and get out.
Highly likely that this friend is from a country in Asia. The idea here seems to give notice and not work for that month BUT still get paid.

Can you remind me again what your friend's employee ID was?
Your friend is too nice to be giving 1 month notice. Tell him/her that when corporations lay you off, they give you your walking papers and escort you out the door the same day. Courtesy is giving 2 weeks notice but you can also quit the same day.
Why would you give 1 month notice to your employer? There is zero potential benefit to you by doing so. If you intend to quit in 1 month, excellent. Write it down, set a reminder on your phone. In 2 weeks give your resignation with a date effective 2 weeks from the date of writing.
If your friend gives notice and then is walked out for any reason (including joining a competitor) he has resigned, and has not been fired. Most companies continue to pay you during your notice period.

There are very slim chances of being fired after giving his notice (unless he's done something illegal and they are onto him), although that only two weeks is the norm. You could still get unemployment benefits if fired in CA, it depends on the reason why you were fired. The employer must prove there was misconduct.

Depends.
