Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Resigned for greener pastures last week

I would urge everyone to consider opportunities outside IBM. If you are seeking far better pay (+ 50%), more scope for career growth and a better culture that would treat employees like they should, that would be a no brainer.

AK and the cool-aid drinking team under him are commanding a rudderless ship that is big on PR and Marketing, but severely lacks implementation; a continuation of the last 15 years of how how this company has been run into the ground.

There is 0% probability of building anything valuable (revenue wise) in the cloud space if IBM cannot attract & retain top talent. I know 15+ top-performers leave in the last couple of years for Amazon, Oracle and Microsoft.

OP back here; replying to a few comments here that had the theme - "I make enough in the area I live & scaling of TC based on LOC"

  • Well it doesn't matter at all where you live or how much you make currently. If you can be the guy who the hiring manager wants desperately, luckily in the industry we are in, you can demand outrageous numbers.

I was in mid 100s at IBM; got into the 240 range with stocks + base (non bay area) @ a non FAANG cloud focused networking company. Comp numbers tend to run in the 300+ range for FAANG and some none FAANG outliers (think AirBnB and Square etc.).

Coasting is fine, although, think about the implications of missing out.

May hurt your feelings, but IBM comp mega sucks! They RA folks who are expensive, and that expense cutting culture means you are either going to be where you are in your career comp-wise or going to be chucked out if a good soul were to give you a handsome raise.

"seems like lot of losers just want to coast"

Obviously the young kids making sh!t $ are upset by coasters.
Hey, if you were making $150k+ a year you'd be coasting too.
Don't try to deny it man bun. Now go back to your soy nuts.

Wow, if one stays here because of their circumstances it's different but seems like lot of losers just want to coast.

No wonder ibm is dying and they wouldn't pay market salaries

Wrong. 100k is plenty decent living in some areas where ibm is on east coast

100+ isnt baller in any place when your salary has been almost same for last 5 yrs!
Just peanuts 3% increases doesn't do anything.
Ibm is losing talent so rapidly and no one wants to work here, so they cant hire from prestigious colleges, similar/better companies etc.

Folks, none of these numbers have any meaning without a specific location. 100+ in CA, USA is bare min to survive. 100+ in smaller cities is baller. -band8 $140k RTP, NC.

Band 9 in US, $180K.
"I work no more than 5 hours a week and bill 40 hours every week"

And I bet they're not being forced back into the office.
Funny how the steerage class is

Even if you want to stay and coast at ibm, just get an external offer and negotiate with ibm to match it.
They'll match 1x1 if your team and bu is doing well comparatively but there's risk of them finding a replacement.

Band 9 in US, $180K. I work no more than 5 hours a week and bill 40 hours every week. Not going anywhere at this point. I feel like I am retired with a pension working at IBM. Why would I go to AWS or Microsoft to work like a dog!

I am Band 8 around .95 PMR in Texas and work about 25-30 hours a week. Only here for WLB until our family is in better shape - fingers crossed end of next year. Hoping to leave in 1-2 years!! I also got verbal offers directly from VP Engineering friends to double my salary.

I was a band 8, got a $200K offer. Trust me, it's better out there. But the downside is I won't have my 10 hour workweek anymore.

Same here b7 usa low 100s at ibm, got offer for 195k without even competing offers. No joke.

The market is super hot and ibm can't compete!

Just go and interview guys, good luck!

Band 7 in US and I'm in the low hundreds.

Just got two verbals last week for 170 and 185 TC respectively. IBM does not have a grasp on what the market is willing to pay for talent with a proven track record...especially with these new grads flooding the market.

Other companies are paying b9 equivalent pay (at similar CoL areas) that you quoted to 5+ yoe. I am talking about legacy companies like cisco, orcl etc. Or mid size companies.

I know many people who went from 100-120k at ibm to 200k number.
If one goes to fang, this could be 250-300k depending on COL

Ibm is completely priced out of market with their bs pmr number they quote.

Just curious, what do you consider low pay at IBM? Give me a number…

You talk about 50-150% increase, so wondering if that could apply to me a band 9 in the US making $175K base salary.

@1xyg+1bLdMtla true except ibm pay is so low, one can get 50-150% raise and even more.

Act of leaving any company is enough to get a raise. It's not isolated to just IBM. ex. I left company A for company B got 30% increase. Left B for C got 17% increase. Came back to company B (IBM) for 10% increase. Companies will pay you to hop around. Just keep interviewing. Then get out when the time is right. =D

Assuming the OP was a US employee, I can only echo - from experience - that IBM top talent in Europe are also leaving the sinking ship in drones.

Our clients also took notice. I speculate that IBM will soon be a small outdated niche company with little respect in the industry and amongst our clients. The clients are also starting to leave the ship.

I was shocked at how strong the job market was when I looked. There's a lot of tech companies (startups, midsized, large) that need talent (engineers, product, sales). I was put on a PIP earlier this year and was concerned, but once I saw how many interviews I got, I knew I'd be ok. Good luck all. I know it can be scary. But IBM is a truly fast sinking ship. Even if you think your talents are outdated, there's someone that will take a chance on you if you're willing to look hard (and assuming you're not a bad employee).
