I've been tasked with training several new hires and for some reason, I have a feeling I might be training my own replacements. I mean, we have been asking for help for a while now but we were being ignored for months and now suddenly we get three fresh-out-of-college additions? What gives?

I don't think you have anything to worry about. In all the years I have worked here I have never seem them have the person about to leave train their replacement before letting them go.
Hmm they used to have you train your replacement onshore or offshore then people got wise and dragged the feet. They have no clue up top so just give them crumbs. If your severence depends on training that does the trick. But then too many people flipped the bird on the way out and said keep severence figure it out yourself. Then management got wise and now trains up your replacement without your knowledge offshore then drops the hammer. At least that is how it works in the tech departments
Here is how it works..
Don't be Disney, don't train your replacement. Let them figure it out how you probably did.
You are training your replacement. You don't just magically receive 3 new out of the box graduates. The powers that be heard your call and said, sounds like that area is mismanaged. We will send in fresh recruits, train them on what surely is nothing more than anyone off the street can do, then once they have received the alloted apprenticeship hours, which if they are MN residence might have been hired through Deeds apprenticeship program where the state actually supplements the salary, then once they determine a sufficient period had occurred, off the top of the stack you go and they become the next set. If those people prove they have any skills, they will quickly pivot to a new position pushing someone else out. It is just the way it is in corporate America. The decision makers are often so far removed from the actual work being done that they are literally clueless what the impact will be. 10 years I have road the tides in and out in the small life raft I have been given. Don't ever plan on long term in this company. If you want that, find a small company with a solid product owned by people vested in both its success and the community. Those jobs are where longevity still exists.
Always follow your gut and have a plan B. This company doesn’t really care about you. You’re a number. We asked for replacements for years and they just kept adding more work and people kept leaving. There is likely a plan so don’t be naive
Trust your instincts.
That person sounds like they are a recruiter or in mgmt. I’d be suspicious too.
I don't think you have anything to worry about. It sounds like the 'powers-to-be' heard y'alls plea's for additional assistance. It may have taken months but you have to think about what goes into getting more help. Each department has so much money they are allocated. The department has to prove the additional help is of a business need and once given the green light, management works with HR to get the right people on-board for the right pay. Those newbies more than likely spent between one to two months in the 'training environment' learning the programs and applicable systems before reaching your virtual door. (From the start of requesting more employees until the newbies get out of basic training, we're looking at minimum of a three-to-four month span).
How you feel about training the new-hires may be more of an insecurity stemming from your feelings regarding the role you play within your department. As long as you meet the assigned Metrics and prove to be a team player, as I know you are, you should have good-standing in your current role.
