Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Do you think that people at AWS or MSFT work more and harder than IBMers?

Thoughts?

I'm a senior data scientist who was RAd in December. I now have a great job with Microsoft. My group appreciates my skills and contributions far more than ibm ever did.

No, I don't work more hours.

Amazon literally has a ura quota and they "hire to fire" so they can keep their original team intact.
This was reported by media and one can check on theblind app and reddit how bad their culture is.

MS culture has really changed after their new ceo but depends on the team you goto, i am sure however that they're better than ibm/amzn.

Both companies pay much much higher than ibm though and stock appreciation is astronomical ofcourse

AWS is a miserable place to work. There’s better tech jobs that are more sustainable and still lucrative.

I know a few people in AWS - they work them very hard most do at least 60 hrs a week all the time, so they are paid for 40 hours but have to work 60 hours so in reality their hourly rate isnt that high. I'm a believer in working the hours they pay you for - none of this 'professional cr-p where you have to work extra hours for nothing.

Indians/other immigrants don't sink or swim the ship.
Good products and services do!

Ibm has had no product that dominates the market in recent time.

MS and Amazon both have loads of market leading products

AWS, MSFT, and IBM have one thing in common and that is an abundance of ind**ns, and where they go, they sink the ship. look at IBM's history and today. i can guess, AWS and MSFT is going through the same process. its slow process but will happen. With their dirty politics, nepotism, bad work ethics etc, they will take down the current top tier, and AWS and MSFT's fall will begin.

Not sure about working longer or harder at FAANGs, but one thing is for sure... since revenue is growing, they probably aren't looking over their shoulder for the RA axe and wondering if they can/should do something about where they work.

IBM does for sure.
Microsoft always has someone else takeover during long support calls once the engineer hits his 8 hrs, while the IBM schnook ends up working alone for up to 24 or more consecutive hours because they never have a replacement tech as backup, only useless duty managers by the dozens who keep asking for a status.
Not sure about AWS, but heard they’re worse than UPS with timing tools ect

I have heard nothing super positive about my friends at Amazon. In fact, if you check on Team Blind it's a bit of a nightmare for some. Personally I'd rather make the most and do the least but I'm a family man.

Working hard at Amazon will help your post-Amazon career.
Not sure working hard and smart at IBM will help your career outside of IBM.

Smarter, not harder

Yes, one of Amazon’s goal is to hire candidates who can raise the average bar of the team, i.e. perform better than at least half of the team. Once hired they are subjected to rank and yank.
Those who perform are well rewarded. When they leave Amazon, there will be plenty of job opportunities, with Amazon on their resume.

Great question! At IBM you have to work way more to accomplish the same thing because everything at IBM is manual. You also need too many meetings to get anything done.

Add to that the constant stress of layoffs and constant restructuring, and the working at IBM feels unbearable without any real monetary reward.

Mainly any growing US companies depend on their US headcount. IBM has laid off many US employees so that hardly few smart people are left. Out of US headcount, 2/3 I would say will retire in the next decade. More than 200000 employees are hired in IBM India. So you can think of where IBM is heading.

Whereas, Amz and MSFT have most of the headcount in the US. Also, they have teams in India. So you can compare how IBM is drowning.

I am sure they work more, surely they must be working more than me. At IBM, I don’t work more than 10 hours a week, and for most week that is pushing.

I agree. At IBM people work like post office. Because all hardworkers and smart people are hired by Amazon and Microsoft.

Definitely AWS, they work them very hard. The average IBMer works 20 hours a week. My emails rarely get a response internally unless I hound them. Final work products are shoddy at best. It’s like I work at the post office or DMV.
